As one half of production duo The Rascals, with Chris Tines, actor/producer/singer-songwriter Leon Thomas III earned creds on fellow Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande’s debut LP, “Yours Truly,” showing his range of talent through his first love of music. He has now released his own EP “Vibes", the follow up to his 2012 offering “Metro Hearts”, in which the vibes are indeed heavy throughout.
The set kicks off with the bass-heavy dance groove “Can’t Tell” — it’s easy to see the 20-year old is far beyond his years. On tracks such as “Pain 2x,” “Bonita, and “Chill,” Thomas keeps the laid back groove theme strong, each one a soundtrack which jazzily vibes along the vein of the east coast in the 90s; surely a reflection to his upbringing in Brooklyn, NY. Karina Pasian then briefly joins Leon on “Wu-Tang,” a snippet flip of Drake’s “Wu-Tang Forever.”
“Vibe: A person's emotional state or the atmosphere of a place as communicated to and felt by others. This mixtape is a quick view into the mind of a free spirit,” states Thomas III about the concept behind “Vibes,” and that’s exactly what the young, rising talent does on this set of 8 tracks.
