Basketball Wives is one of the hottest reality series out and these ladies have social networks buzzing and drama flowing. We often focus on the arguments and violent tantrums thrown by the opinionated cast, but they are still women who have experienced the same emotions that we all do; including heart break. Although the show is entitled Basketball Wives, don't take it literally; majority of the women divorced the basketball aspect of their lives. The dramatic altercations are the focal point of the show, leaving the ladies' vulnerability out of the spotlight and unnoticed. When taking a look at Basketball Wives history we, found several heartbreaking situations that occurred between the women and their previous significant others and chose our top five.
Everyone goes through their ups and downs in relationships. Some can get crazier then others, but we all get hurt. We are watching hearts being broken while they attempt to pick up the pieces.
Who do you think has had the worst luck with men out of the Basketball wives?
Royce Reed and her Father
In episode 11 of season four, a more melodramatic argument surfaces between Robert Reed and his daughter when the father-daughter duo meets in a public park. Royce is confronted with questions regarding her son, Braylon Howard. Her father is worried about the amount of exposure her son is getting; which offends Royce and sends her over the edge and onto the floor in tears. Isn’t it ironic though-she makes a remark about her father treating her like a little girl, while throwing a tantrum in public? But let’s not blame it all on Royce. Her father’s constant scrutiny and lack of support also contributes to the problems in their relationship but we can only hope that they are working through them. This wasn’t your typical heartbreak but it did bring about a few unforgettable, yet unfortunate scenes.
Kesha Nichols and Richard Jefferson
Although the petite country dancer was on the show for one season, we heard about her tragic breakup with Richard Jefferson in just a few words at the beginning of the season. It should not come as a shock that multiple rumors stirred, concerning the details of their decision to call off their wedding and end their five-year relationship. The most popular theory circulating in the media world was that he broke up with her in an email the night before the wedding and neglected to inform guests of the cancellation.
Kesha sat down with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America to expose the truth behind their break up. She stated that they were having problems during the month before their set date and had several conversations about calling it quits. She went on to explain that the email he sent to her did not come as a shock and they discussed it later that night. Despite the fact that the situation was not as intense as it was portrayed in the gossip magazines, it was still heartbreaking. In Kesha’s words, it was “every girls worst nightmare.” Hopefully by now she has woken up from her nightmare and moved on to a new reality.
Evelyn Lozada and Chad Javon Johnson
Let’s revisit the bloody incident that transpired between the feisty Boricua and her football husband, formerly known as, Ochocinco just a few days after their one month anniversary as husband and wife. On August 12, 2012, Chad made mistakes that altered Evelyn’s trust in him as a husband by viciously head butting her; causing her forehead to gash open and require stitches. According to Evelyn, she found a condom wrapper on the floor of their car and confronted him about his infidelity. The argument escalated to physical abuse after she let him know that she refused stay in an unfaithful marriage and she would not have a child with him.
The hype surrounding their dispute seemed to subside until the premiere of Basketball Wives where the topic is brought up in several scenes.
So far Evelyn has discussed her domestic violence experience on camera with her mother, a therapist and a few of her fellow cast members; who, of course have an opinion on the next step she should take. We even witnessed Suzie reach out to her on the latest episode to let Evelyn know that going back to Chad is the wrong move to make. Although she did leave him, she made it clear on the show that she was still in love with Chad, which often led to heartbreaking outbursts of water works. To make matters worst, two days after the event, Evelyn’s brother in law lost his battle with cancer; which added to her grief and caused Evelyn to confess that at one point she actually wanted to die. Only she knows the level of pain that was inflicted upon her, but I can say that it takes true strength to power through her struggles and continue to live her life.
Jennifer and Eric
Jennifer Williams, the ex-wife of Eric Williams and ex-cast member of the series showcased their marital problems throughout the first and second seasons. As a result the world was exposed to the source of their divorce, which included infidelity, disrespect for one another as husband and wife, and total disregard for the sanctity of marriage.
During episode three of season two, the ex-couple had the talk that revealed their decision to file for divorce; calling it quits after three years of marriage. There were a few tears shed on Jennifer’s part, but eventually she strategically moved on from the past three years by throwing a divorce party, in honor of her broken ties to Eric. The real heartbreak came when the two came into a physical altercation after Eric walked away from a frustrating argument regarding his mother. If you have not guessed by now, I am referring to the memorable scene where Eric viciously chucks the drink into Jennifer’s face in between his annoying overuse of the phrase “know what I’m saying.” Although Eric is without a doubt, 100 percent wrong in this situation, let’s not forget that Jennifer did ignite the flame when she throw her drink at Eric after he walked away. That is where a lot of women go wrong; we need to realize that men walk away for a reason and Jennifer learned the hard way.
To see two people that once professed their love to one another, behave so maliciously towards each other is heartbreaking enough. I cannot begin to imagine how the two felt after looking back on the results of their rage unfolding before them.
Tami Roman and Kenny Anderson
Tough Tami was introduced to us in the premiere of season two along with her ex husband former NBA player, Kenny Anderson and their two daughters, Lyric and Jazz. Tami and her girls might have lived a comfortable life while they were still a family but according to Tami, when she called off their marriage, he cut off her funds; refusing to pay child support.
Tami opens up to Shaunie O’Neil during their first conversation on the episode, and reveals that before the show “it was a struggle because there were times when her and her daughters were living on food stamps and public assistance with no one to turn to.”
If that is not enough ex-drama for you, later on in the episode Tami reconnects Lyric and Jazz with their father for the first time in ten years, admitting that she was to be partially blamed for their separation. During the awkward meeting, the two adults play the blame game while their teenage daughters sit back in tears, horrified about what they were witnessing. Kenny eventually admits that he was not ready to become a father at the time, which is common for a lot of young black athletes who want nothing, but to play ball and have a good time. The most unfortunate aspect of this situation is that Tami shared her heartbreak with her girls, who were left fatherless for so long. Ultimately Tami, Kenny and the girls settle their differences in therapy to repair their relationships in a later episode. Tami even has dinner with Kenny, where he apologizes and takes responsibility for his childish behavior when they were married.
Hopefully their road to recovery did not end when the cameras stopped rolling, and the ex-couple continued to work on mending the relationship of a family torn apart by pride and immaturity.
