Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett are heading for Lifetime via the just confirmed feature “Betty & Coretta.”
Set to portray Betty Shabazz (Malcolm X) and Coretta Scott King (Martin Luther King, Jr.) respectively, both will begin filming the project in just a few weeks.
According to THR, Bassett and Ruby Dee were cast for the project, previously titled Parallel Lives, Thursday.
First reported in May, “Betty and Coretta” will follow both women’s lives as single mothers following the assassinations of their husbands.
While “Betty and Coretta” is a working title for the Lifetime feature, which joins the recently shot remake of Steel Magnolias with Jill Scott, Queen Latifah and more, this film is also a big deal for Blige beyond her role.
Along with Polly Anthony, Larry Sanitsky and Jaja Johnson, Mary J. Blige will be executive producing the movie.
Production begins in September. An airdate has not been revealed at this point.

Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett are two of the most recognizable names in entertainment, and they have teamed up to star in a new Lifetime movie – “Betty and Coretta”. This biopic will tell the story of civil rights icons Betty Shabazz and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s wife, Coretta Scott King, as they continue their respective legacies after the untimely deaths of their husbands. The film promises to be an inspiring look at how these women faced adversity without losing sight of their goals for social justice, which makes it one of the most anticipated releases from Lifetime this year.

The partnership between Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett is sure to bring some serious star power to the project. Mary J. Blige has been on top of her game since she released her debut album What’s The 411? over 20 years ago, racking up nine Grammy Awards along with numerous nominations over the course of her career. On the other hand, Angela Bassett has had no shortage of outstanding roles throughout her decades-long acting career; playing iconic characters such as Tina Turner in 1993’s ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’ or Ramona Sayers in last year’s hit drama series ‘9-1-1’.

With such powerful forces behind it, there is little doubt that “Betty and Coretta” will be a must watch when it premieres sometime later this year on Lifetime. Whether you’re a hardcore fan or just looking for something inspirational during this pandemic era, don’t miss out on what could become one of 2019’s most talked about films!

In addition to detailing the struggles each woman faced as they worked towards making a lasting contribution to society, this film also highlights how their respective legacies continue to influence modern culture even today.

With its all-star cast, timely message, and inspiring narrative, Betty and Coretta promises to be an unforgettable cinematic experience that will leave audiences feeling moved long after it airs.

Cast And Crew

The spotlight is certainly on the two leading ladies of Betty and Coretta. Grammy Award-winning singer Mary J. The direction comes from Yves Simoneau who previously worked on such works as Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee and Napoleon & Betsy. With a team like this, viewers can guarantee that every aspect of this movie will be executed with utmost care and precision to deliver an emotionally gripping experience.

Betty and Coretta promises to be more than just another biopic about two remarkable figures – it celebrates their courage, friendship, and determination in a way never seen before onscreen. It’s sure to bring out both laughter and tears but most importantly, inspire audiences everywhere to continue fighting for justice no matter what life throws at them.

Conclusion

I’m so excited for the release of Lifetime’s Betty and Coretta, starring Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett! This movie is set to depict the lives of civil rights icons Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King after their husbands’ assassinations in 1968. It promises to be a powerful tale about two strong women and their fight for justice as they continued fighting for equality and racial progress.

The cast includes some amazing talent; Mary J. Blige stars as Dr. Betty Shabazz, with Angela Bassett playing Mrs. Coretta Scott King. These incredible actresses bring such power to these roles which makes me confident that this film will do both ladies justice by portraying them accurately and thoughtfully. Additionally, the crew behind the project are equally talented including executive producers Queen Latifah, Shakim Compere, and Shelby Stone who have created an impressive body of work throughout their careers.

I can’t wait until this movie airs on Lifetime in February 2013! I’m sure it will be full of emotion, strength-filled performances, empowering stories, and inspiring messages – all elements that make great movies memorable experiences we’ll never forget!
