Plans for a sequel of the 1996 blockbuster film Independence Day may not come to fruition, at least not with Will Smith.

According to, the rapper/actor, who played fighter pilot Captain Steven Hiller, has decided to opt-out of a reprising of the film. This comes after director Roland Emmerich revealed in September (2013) that Smith had expressed interest.

The follow-up will be set 20 years on from the original alien invasion, when the extra-terrestrials' reinforcements from outer space finally arrive.

The film is scheduled for release by Independence Day 2016 in the U.S.
