When we look at a city like Chicago, it is troubling. Chicago is one of the many US cities struggling from inner city violence. Yes, there are many factors that have created this senseless violence with some revolving around lack of opportunity. However, we as people need to really think about what we are doing. Throughout the country, minorities are killing minorities. This is not the dream MLK was talking about . This is truly a nightmare. What are we killing for?
Martin Luther King's mother was killed by a deranged gunman that killed her at a Sunday service while she played the organ. The Kings were fighting for good and they died for it. What are we fighting for?
You may think you know what Martin Luther King Jr. would be feeling if he were alive today. After all, he was an advocate for civil rights and equality, and his messages still resonate with people across the globe. However, there are certain things happening in our world today that he would not be pleased with.
Firstly, the current political climate would not sit well with MLK Jr. He believed in democracy and peaceful protest to bring about change. However, the divisiveness and hostility we see in politics today would go against everything he stood for.
From name-calling to blatant disrespect of elected officials, it is a far cry from the respectful discourse that Dr. King envisioned as necessary for progress towards a just society.

The fact that our leaders are more interested in playing political games than actually serving their constituents would undoubtedly leave King feeling frustrated. He was passionate about fighting for justice and making sure everyone had equal opportunities regardless of their background or status.
It’s clear that many of our politicians have lost sight of what’s really important and are more concerned with pleasing their donors and lobbyists than doing what’s right. King would not be down with the way people treat each other in politics these days. The name-calling, insults, and lack of civility have become commonplace on both sides of the aisle.
For someone who believed so strongly in peaceful means of protest and non-violent resistance, seeing people act so aggressively towards one another would surely leave him feeling disheartened. We could all benefit from taking a page out of King’s book when it comes to treating others with kindness and respect even when we disagree with them politically.
The State of Race Relations in America
You can see that race relations in America are still a long way from being truly equal. Despite the Civil Rights Movement and the efforts of many activists, there is still systemic racism and discrimination embedded in many aspects of society.
From police brutality to employment opportunities, people of color continue to face significant challenges. One clear example is the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color. Black Americans have been hit harder by the pandemic than any other group, with higher rates of infection, hospitalization, and death. This reflects longstanding disparities in healthcare access and quality, as well as underlying socioeconomic factors such as poverty and lack of affordable housing.
Moreover, recent incidents such as the murder of George Floyd have highlighted ongoing issues with police violence against Black people. While some progress has been made in terms of increasing accountability for law enforcement officers who use excessive force, there is still much work to be done to address institutional racism within police departments and ensure that all citizens are treated fairly regardless of their race or ethnicity.
Martin Luther King Jr., who fought tirelessly for civil rights and social justice, would undoubtedly be disappointed by these persistent inequalities.
