Roots
New Orleans has always been a hub of musical creativity. The Big Easy has always had a rich history and culture that helped to shape the sights and sounds of this dynamic place that is more mixed up then their spicy gumbo. This city’s mix of Spanish, French, African and Native American cultures has created a sound that is unique. Jazz, Funk, Rhythm & Blues, Rock & Roll and now Hip Hop are just as much a part of the musical landscape as their brilliant architecture. Brass band parades and above ground cemeteries are some things that are part of Mr. Alsina’s roots.
New Orleans also has a darker side that has always been plagued with poverty and violence. August constantly speaks of the beautiful ugly contrast between culture and crime in his hometown. He has experienced both sides and finds a way to take us on a guided tour through his hood.
