Teedra Moses is headed toward her tenth anniversary since releasing her debut album Complex Simplicity. Throughout the years she has been in the studio writing for herself and others or collaborating with Wale, Rick Ross, Nas' Bravehearts, Raphael Saadiq, more. She jumped back in time to recount the studio stories of creating "Be Your Girl," Belly's impact on "You’ll Never Find" and not talking about how she collaborated with the father of her children among several other songs.
Teedra Moses & Braveheart
I was working with producer Paul Poli at the time and he submitted some records to Nas that I’d put hooks on. Nas, who was working with the Bravehearts played the records for them & they chose “Realize.”
Teedra Moses & Raphael Saadiq
I met Raphael at a friend’s Christmas party & my friend played Complex Simplicity sampler for him. He invited me to come and work with him, during that time we made 3 records; “Take Me”, “I Want You Back”, and “Chic”. He was really cool & down to earth. Even though I was a new artist he made me comfortable to do me. He handled all the music & let me handle the lyric & melody part.
Be Your Girl
The lyrics to “Be Your Girl” were written for and inspired by a guy I had a MASSIVE crush on at the time. I am a very outspoken and frank person so people don’t think I’m shy. Some even laugh when I say I’m shy, but I really am. I wanted to tell him but I never did. I liked this guy so much in my stalker-ish obsessed mind I was in love with him (lol) and didn’t even know him nor him me. Yea… I’m a dreamer that way. He ended up getting married and I got a classic record. All is well that ends well 🙂
Teeda Moses & Ras Kass
Ras Kass is my children’s father and at that time we got along. Next question… LOL
The lyrics to Backstroke were inspired by just that THE BACKSTROKE! I was in a relationship for many years with a man that loved me, but clearly didn’t respect me. I loved him but couldn’t stand him. We argued all the time… then we made up. The making up is what kept me there as long as I did stay. The misconception of this song is that it is a sexy song when in all actuality I am talking mad shit to the guy… “mostly I feel your just a waste of my time…” but the sex was good and he was the love of my life and I think if you ask him he would tell you I was the same to him.
Teedra Moses & Rick Ross
Rick Ross called me over to his house because he wanted some soulful vocals on a couple records. I sang on a few tracks & Amsterdam was one of my favorite. We both have a fondness for Amsterdam vibes… He ended up using two of the three records on the highly anticipated “God Forgives I Don’t” album. It was a blessing.
Wale was one of the coolest when I first started hanging with MMG. I was a fan of his first album before even meeting him & felt like we had a similar audience. Wale’s just a person that is really into doing music so I hit him & asked him to hop on the remix to “Another LuvR.” Sent it to him & couple days later he sent it back and graciously did my video as well!
You’ll Never Find
The lyrics to “You’ll Never Find” were inspired by watching hours of the Hype Williams directed film BELLY. During the time I was working on Complex Simplicity I was in love with the movie Belly (not that it was even a new film… I just loved Nas lol) so I wrote a song from a woman who dates a hustling man’s perspective. “hugging blocks all night…when he should be home hugging you”
