Every year, ESSENCE salutes black women in music who are making a fresh statement during their annual Black Women in Music showcase. The event (sponsored by Lincoln and My Black is Beautiful) takes place during Grammy week in Los Angeles. Past honorees have been movers and shakers such as music industry maven Sylvia Rhone, Grammy nominated Janelle Monáe, and Grammy winner Mary J. Blige.

For its 4th Annual ESSENCE Black Women in Music event taking place on February 6, 2013 in Los Angeles, trendsetters Lianne La Hava and Solange Knowles will be 2013’s featured artists as an example of “what’s current, what’s new, and what’s next.” Havas and Knowles will each perform at the event hosted by Kelly Rowland and ESSENCE editor-at-large Emil Wilbekin.

ESSENCE editor-in-chief Constance C.R. White says in a statement, “What makes ESSENCE Black Women in Music so distinctive is that we are able to highlight the success of amazing African-American women in music, who are not only changing the game, but also creating the rules…This year, we look forward to recognizing the incredible gifts of Lianne La Havas and Solange Knowles, who are each making their own inimitable mark on the industry and around the world.”

The February issue of ESSENCE includes a section called 28 Days of Black Women in Music, and will feature the contributions of African-America women in music; past, present, and future.

It’s Grammy week, and Essence magazine is ready to salute two of music’s biggest stars: Lianne La Havas and Solange Knowles. Both artists have seen their share of success in the industry, from chart-topping singles to numerous awards and accolades. They’re also both an inspiration for fans around the world who appreciate their artistry and talent. So as we look ahead to this year’s Grammys, let’s take a moment to recognize these two remarkable women and all that they’ve achieved in their careers thus far.

The British singer/songwriter La Havas has had quite a journey since her debut album released back in 2012. She won the BRITs Critics’ Choice award that same year, becoming only the second female artist ever to receive such recognition at the time. Her soulful sound has resonated with audiences worldwide, earning her multiple Juno Awards nominations among other accolades.

Solange Knowles is no stranger to fame either—she’s been making waves since she first stepped onto the scene over a decade ago. Not only did she earn five Grammy nods for her 2016 release A Seat at The Table, but she was recently nominated for Album Of The Year once again this past December with When I Get Home! These are just some of her many accomplishments; it’s clear that Solange is here to stay as one of R&B’s most influential forces today.
