Mariah Carey and “American Idol” producers faced the music over the show, Mariah’s beef with Nicki Minaj and allegations that the entire thing was a ploy to pull in ratings Tuesday.
Because a lot was said at the press event, read on for a breakdown by subject:
‘Idol’ executive Mike Darnell on rumors that Mariah and Nicki’s argument was fake:
“Whatever feuds there have been – and this isn’t just between Nicki and Mariah but Keith (Urban) and Randy (Jackson) as well – are genuine. There is passion in this group. They disagree about the talent, and the ways to approach the talent.”
Mariah Carey on professionalism:
“There are a lot of strong personalities…I think the fighting is what it is. This is American Idol. It’s bigger than all of that. But this is not just a big trumped-up thing.”
Mariah Carey on “Mariah vs. Nicki” being unfair and a distraction:
“The whole thing is convoluted, and it’s a distraction from the show and the contestants, and I think it’s unfair to them really.”
Nicki Minaj on the situation:
“We’re all professionals.”
In related news, FOX denies sending video of the now infamous Nicki vs. Mariah fight to TMZ. They say it was sent by a “rogue employee” and they did not “encourage” that individual to send the video to TMZ.
As previously reported, Mariah Carey also sat down with Barbara Walters for an exclusive interview that aired Monday night. In that interview, she made it clear that security was hired due to the situation with Minaj and that her focus is not only on the contestants, but being around for her twins.
“American Idol” premieres Wednesday, Jan. 16 on FOX.
