With almost half a century in the entertainment business, veteran Stephanie Mills is still doing what she loves; music. Fresh off her headlining performance during New York City’s Blue Note Music Festival in June, the 55-year-old spoke “On Air With Egypt” recently via Atlanta’s V103 about who she likes and dated in the music business.
Mills opened up about her fling with the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, insisting she wanted to marry him, but he wasn’t ready at the time.
“Yes, I really did,” Mills admits about dating Michael. “I loved Michael. I thought that I was going to be Mrs. Michael Jackson, but I was ready at 20 and 21 to get married and he was not even close to getting married or having a girlfriend at that time, but yes we dated. We dated for awhile.”
Mills, who gained popularity on the charts in the 80s with hits like “I’ve Learned to Respect (The Power of Love) and conquered the Broadway stage in “The Wiz” and “Maggie Flynn,” also says she likes several of today’s top artists, in addtion to the late Tupac Shakur.
She adds: “I like Jay-Z. I love Luda. I love Ledisi. I like Beyonce of course. I think she’s just brilliant. She’s a triple threat. But my favorite- my all time rapper is Tupac. See I could have been Tupac’s girlfriend.”
Well well Stephanie!!!
Stephanie Mills was one of the most iconic singers and songwriters in R&B history. She had a passion for music that spanned decades, but it turns out she also had an admiration for another legendary artist: Michael Jackson. In a recent interview, Mills revealed that there was once a time when she wanted to marry him – but unfortunately, he wasn’t ready. This is her story.
In her heyday, Stephanie Mills was unstoppable. From 1979-1988 alone, she released nine studio albums, with many of them going gold or platinum. Her powerhouse voice could make anyone feel something special – so it’s no surprise that even the King of Pop felt something particular about her too. When asked if they ever dated back in the day, Mills confirmed what we’ve long suspected: “Yes! We were very close.”
But things didn’t work out as planned between these two musical icons due to Jackson’s hesitancy towards committing to marriage at such a young age – he was only 22 at the time while Mills was 19 years old. It certainly must have been heartbreaking for her, especially considering how much love and respect she has for him today; “He’s still my favorite person,” said Mills fondly during the same interview all these years later.
Stephanie Mills’ Relationship With Michael Jackson
Stephanie Mills and Michael Jackson had a brief relationship in the early 1980s, though it was never officially confirmed by either of them. The two were close friends who seemed to form an emotional bond with one another. They attended many events together and Stephanie even visited him on tour when he traveled across the country.
Though the public speculated that their relationship could be more than just platonic, neither of them ever spoke about it publicly or made any sort of announcement regarding a potential marriage. It is known, however, that Stephanie wanted to marry Michael at some point but he wasn’t ready for such a commitment yet. Despite this, they remained good friends until his untimely death in 2009.
Ultimately, we may never know what really happened between these two superstars—but it’s clear from the evidence available that there was something special between them. Whether that ‘something’ was romantic or simply platonic remains unclear; all we can do is speculate based on stories told by those closest to them both.
Reaction To The Unfulfilled Marriage Proposal
It’s understandable why Stephanie wanted to marry Michael – they were close friends and clearly had a strong connection. Unfortunately, her dreams of marriage would never come true, leaving many to wonder what could have been if the two had taken their relationship further.
Despite being disappointed that things didn’t work out as she’d hoped, Stephanie was understanding of Michael’s decision not to pursue a romantic relationship with her and respected his wishes. She remained supportive of him throughout their friendship and even visited him on tour when he traveled across the country.
Though we may never know exactly how they felt about each other or what might have happened between them romantically, it is clear from evidence available that there was something special between them—something beyond just platonic friendship. It’s only natural for us all to speculate about what could have been in this case; but ultimately, we must respect both parties’ decisions and accept that whatever it was will remain a mystery forevermore.
