Jill Scott, Queen Latifah in Remake of ‘Steel Magnolias’

The Lifetime Network is revamping the classic film “Steel Magnolias” with a remake featuring an all black cast that includes Alfre Woodard, Phylicia Rashad, Queen Latifah, Jill Scott, Adepero Oduye and Rashad’s daughter, Condola Rashad. Like the original, the remake will follow the lives of six Louisiana women as they travel through life together.

Lifetime issued a statement in which the president and general manager of Lifetime Entertainment Nancy Dubuc said, “The caliber of talent associated with this film is astounding and falls in line with our strategy to make Lifetime a first stop for the industry’s best both in front of and behind the camera.”

She continues, “Queen Latifah, Phylicia, Alfre, Jill, Adepero and Condola are some of the most celebrated women in music, film, television and stage — and we could not be more thrilled and honored for them to bring Robert Harling’s poignant story about the strength of women to a whole new generation.”

The remake has been received with mixed emotions, some unsure of the necessity of remaking a classic, and some uncertain of whether the decision to make the cast all black was a good one. What do you think?
