Destiny's Child reunion no more? According to Michelle Williams, there won't be a reunion at the Super Bowl as reported by many sources last week.
Shutting down all of those reports over the weekend, Williams told WRUG that she won't be on the field for any performances because the musical Fela! kicks off on January 29.
"That's not confirmed. It is rumored. I'm gonna be in the musical Fela! I hate to disappoint the people and tell them that it's not true," Williams shared with WRUG Media Group.
As previously reported, Michelle Williams is appearing in the latest run of the Tony Award-winning musical, which opens in Washington D.C. Tuesday.
While Michelle Williams says the reunion is not confirmed, it is noted on the Fela! website that she will not be appearing in the musical between January 31 and Feb.3. With the Super Bowl being on the 3rd of February, it seems Michelle might have been trying to throw off press, in this case WRUG Media.
Nonetheless, I'll be watching when Beyonce (and Destiny's Child) takes the stage, during the Super Bowl half-time show, in New Orleans this Sunday, Feb. 3.
Michelle Williams has sent shockwaves through the music industry! The former Destiny’s Child member recently shut down any possibility of a reunion at the upcoming Super Bowl. Fans had been hoping that one of music’s most iconic girl bands would be making their highly-anticipated comeback, but it looks like those dreams have been dashed. So what happened? Let’s take a closer look…
The ladies of Destiny’s Child rose to fame in the late 90s and early 2000s with chart topping hits such as ‘Bills, Bills, Bills’, ‘Say My Name’ and ‘Survivor’. They were considered pioneers for women in R&B/pop music during this time period, paving the way for other female acts to follow suit. With three original members – Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams – they quickly became household names around the world.
However, since their breakup over 15 years ago there have only been sporadic reunions between them, leaving fans wanting more. That is until news broke out that the trio was discussing possible plans to perform together again on one of the biggest stages in American sports: The Superbowl halftime show. But after much anticipation from eager listeners across the globe, Michelle Williams put an end to these rumors by denying any involvement in a potential reunion performance.
Background Of The Rumours
Rumours of a Destiny’s Child reunion during the Super Bowl LIV halftime show have been circulating since late 2019. Fans were excited to hear that Beyoncé, Michelle Williams, and Kelly Rowland might be reuniting on stage after almost two decades apart. While there was never any official confirmation from either the band or their representatives, many people believed it would happen as all three singers had hinted at some sort of collaboration leading up to the event. However, just days before the game, Michelle Williams put an end to any hopes of a reunion with a statement denying its existence.
In her statement released on February 1st, 2020, Williams clarified that while she would always love being part of Destiny’s Child, The Super Bowl performance wouldn’t feature a reunion. She also said that although she wished things could be different between them sometimes, they were still family. With this announcement fans felt disappointed yet understanding about why no reunion would take place—the members simply hadn’t found time in their busy schedules for a full-fledged collaboration.
Despite not having a traditional group performance like everyone hoped for, each member did make individual appearances throughout the night’s festivities; Beyoncé performed solo during both halves of the Halftime Show and sang ‘Lifted’ alongside gospel singer Yolanda Adams afterwards; meanwhile both Kelly and Michelle joined in from other locations via remote video link to perform ‘Say My Name’. Although briefer than expected, these performances gave fans something special nonetheless.
Reasons Behind The Reunion Cancellation
Despite the disappointment of not seeing a reunion, there are many possible reasons why it never happened. Firstly, scheduling conflicts could have been an issue; with all three members having successful solo careers and other commitments leading up to the Super Bowl, coordinating their schedules might have simply been too difficult. Additionally, the group had already gone through significant changes since they first formed in 1997—Kelly left after the release of ‘Survivor’ in 2001 and Michelle followed suit soon after—so adding more into the mix might’ve felt overwhelming for everyone involved.
Finally, Destiny’s Child may have wanted to avoid any further controversy that could come from a reunion performance. The band was no stranger to falling out over money issues in its earlier years and Beyoncé has always tried her best to ensure she looks like a professional businesswoman who values respect and loyalty above all else. A reunion on such a big stage would definitely bring some unwanted attention which none of them were likely willing to risk happening again.
Ultimately, we can only speculate as to why this much-anticipated reunion didn’t take place but fans should still be thankful for what they did get: brief yet memorable individual performances that will forever remain embedded in our memories.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I think it’s a shame that the Destiny’s Child ‘Super Bowl’ reunion didn’t happen. It would have been an amazing experience for fans all over the world to see the iconic girl group perform together again after all these years.
The reason why Michelle Williams shut down the reunion is still unclear; however, it could be due to her personal choice or contractual obligations with her current Broadway show ‘Once On This Island.’ Whatever the reasons may be behind this sudden cancellation, one thing we can be sure of is that fans everywhere were left disappointed and longing for more from their favorite trio.
I hope in the future there will be another opportunity for members of Destiny’s Child to reunite on stage and bring back some nostalgic memories for us all! After all, no matter how much time passes by, nothing beats seeing your idols come together and share their love through music.
