It’s difficult to find someone of the feminine persuasion to ever see the heights of the hip-hop music production game (if at all), even more rare if she’s in high school! Ontario, Canada native Ebony “Wondagurl” Oshunrinde is an aspiring producer whose track was placed on one of the biggest hip-hop releases this year: Jay-Z’s new 12th album Magna Carta Holy Grail on the bass-heavy song “Crown.”
The beatmaker has been making music since she was nine years old, inspired by mega producer Timabaland and studied videos on Youtube to learn the ropes. She then caught the ear of Drake’s sideman Boi 1da who helped her win the 2012 Battle of the Beatmakers competition. After supplying her talents on Travis Scott’s “Owl Pharaoh” mixtape, Scott contacted her to inform her that one of her tracks was chosen by Jay-Z for his upcoming opus. It was her work on Travis Scott’s “Uptown” that caught Jay’s attention.
"I made a beat and sent it to Travi$ Scott and he said he was gonna do some stuff with it," Oshunrinde recalls of the track which would later become “Crown.” "A few days later he texted me and said he was about to change my life but he wouldn't tell me what he was talking about. Then he called me and told me I was officially on Jay-Z's album." The teen beatmaker took Sizzla's "Solid As A Rock" and added the trap sound popular now. "A lot of people are making trap and it's,like a little bit of that with real hip-hop mixed into one beat," she explained.
