Still great marketing, but it looks like Jay-Z’s Samsung album sales/giveaway will not count towards his positioning on the charts, says Billboard.
Samsung Galaxy users have the opportunity for the first 1 million people who download an app on June 24 will get Magna Carta Holy Grail sent to them for free on July 4. Billboard editorial director Bill Werde posted a letter on the Billboard site stating the reason for the exclusion, saying it’s because Samsung isn’t actually selling the album through their phones.
Werde writes, “Once something is — i.e., when Jay's Magna Carta Holy Grail hits retailers and fans have the chance to express their support and interest by buying it, we'll obviously count those sales. I've been told that label sources expect first-week sales of the album to be in line with the 400,000-450,000 his recent albums have shifted. That will almost certainly give Jay his lucky 13th No. 1 on the Billboard 200.”
We have a feeling Magna Carta Holy Grail will still make a solid first week sales debut.
Meanwhile Jay dropped the tracklisting and artwork for his upcoming opus. No features are reported, other than those we know contributed production, like Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, Rick Rubin, and Pharrell. There are 13 track, and two bonus offerings, one being the previously released “Open Letter.” It’s reported that Nirvana’s grunge classic, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is also sampled on the set. The artwork is rligious in nature, hence the title.

Music Release Promotion Strategy
In an unprecedented move, hip-hop mogul Jay-Z has decided to team up with tech giant Samsung for the release of his twelfth studio album, Magna Carta Holy Grail. The promotion strategy centers around a unique distribution deal between Samsung and the artist himself: 1 million copies of MCHG will be released exclusively on July 4th via a free app available exclusively to Galaxy device owners. While this may seem like great news for both parties involved, there’s an important caveat that could have huge implications for how music is marketed in the future: none of these sales will count towards Billboard charting figures or other metrics used to measure success in the industry.
This means that even though Jay-Z’s fans are still being asked to purchase his product (albeit virtually), their contributions won’t contribute to any sort of traditional “success metric” such as total number of albums sold or top 10 spots on Billboard charts. This could potentially discourage major labels from investing heavily in innovative marketing strategies if they don’t see immediate returns – something not seen before within the music industry.
Despite all this, it looks like Jay-Z is going full steam ahead with his promotional plans; he recently unveiled the tracklist and artwork for Magna Carta Holy Grail, along with some accompanying videos featuring artists like Beyoncé, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. It seems clear that despite its unorthodox approach, Jigga man remains committed to giving fans something special – no matter what form it takes.
Album Features
The promotional strategy for Magna Carta Holy Grail has been set, and the album looks to be full of special features. As one would expect from a Jay-Z album, MCHG includes huge collaborations with some of music’s biggest names. The tracklist features guest appearances by Beyoncé, Rick Ross, Frank Ocean, Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams – all of whom have had major success in their own right. Additionally, Kanye West is featured on two tracks as both a producer and performer. This star-studded lineup promises an exciting listening experience that will surely appeal to fans of each artist involved.
In terms of production quality, Jay-Z has put together an impressive team of producers including Swizz Beats, Timbaland and No I.D., among others. These industry veterans complement each other well; Swizz Beatz brings hard hitting drums while Timbaland provides more melodic textures alongside his signature drum patterns. Furthermore, No I.D.’s soundscape contributions add depth and atmosphere to the overall mix. It’s clear that this combination of experienced talent will ensure top notch production values throughout the entire project.
All these elements combined make it clear that Magna Carta Holy Grail is sure to be one of hip hop’s defining albums when it drops later this year; from its unique marketing strategy to its stacked list of collaborators and talented producers working behind the scenes – there are many reasons why fans should get excited about Jigga man’s twelfth studio effort!
Conclusion
The music release promotion strategy of Jay-Z’s new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail was completely unique. It allowed Samsung users to get the album early and free. This created a lot of buzz for the artist and his upcoming project.
Although this approach stirred up a ton of hype, it also led to some controversy as well. The sales for the album on Samsung devices won’t count towards official chart numbers, which affects how successful an artist is perceived to be in terms of commercial success. Despite that, there’s been no denying that this move by Jay-Z has established him as one of the most innovative artists in hip hop today.
It will be interesting to see if other musicians follow suit with similar strategies when releasing their projects from now on. Regardless, Magna Carta Holy Grail is sure to become another classic album added to Jay-Z’s impressive catalogue. I’m looking forward hearing what he cooked up this time around!
