Singer, songwriter, model and actress Aaliyah Dana Haughton aka Aaliyah was an angel on earth and she continues to be an angel in heaven. She was born in Brooklyn and raised in Detroit, Michigan. At the tender age of ten, she appeared on Star Search and things went uphill from there. Aaliyah signed to Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson’s Blackground Records at twelve years old. Hankerson introduced her to R. Kelly, who became her mentor as well as lead songwriter and producer of “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number,” which sold three million copies in the United States. She would move on to work with Timbaland and Missy Elliot on her ‘One In A Million’ album.
Today, she has left with us a legacy of a beautiful and talented young woman. Even new artist like Drake pay her homage. It wasn’t hard to see the light that shined bright threw her smile from her spirit. Her music is a testament to who she was as a person as well as an artist. Here are ten songs we knew and loved from Aaliyah. (Not in a specific order.)

What am I gonna do?

At Your Best You Are Love
When you feel what you feel
Oh, how hard for me to understand
So many things have taken place
before this love affair began
But if you feel, oh, like I feel
Confusion can give way to doubt
For there are times
when I fall short of what I say
What I say I’m all about,
all about

If at first you don’t succeed
