From the Hollywood back lot to the campaign trail, Hollywood actress Kerry Washington has become one of this generation’s brightest and most admirable stars.
“I want to do whatever I can to make democracy sexy â to make political awareness exciting” says Washington who has spent time on Barack Obama’s campaign trail throughout much of 2008.
Finding her voice and passion for film and advocacy at an early age in The Bronx, Kerry Washington, also a George Washington University alumni, has earned a spot amongst some of Hollywood’s leading women including Halle Berry, Alfre Woodard, Angela Bassett and Sheryl Lee Ralph.
Making her film debut in the independent drama ‘Our Song,’ Washington became a familiar face in popular big-screen films like ‘Save The Last Dance,’ ‘I Think I Love My Wife,’ ‘Lakeview Terrace’ and most notably appearing opposite Jamie Foxx in the blockbuster ‘Ray’. But Washington’s talent and knack for the arts extends beyond her own Hollywood stardom.
“Performing for me started as creative child care, because my parents worked full time. I used to dance ballet at Carnegie Hall and spend after school at the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club,” Washington told USA Today last year. “Had it not been for public arts funding, that wouldn’t have happened.”
Today Washington not only talks the talk but she walks the walk â albeit fashionable, graceful and stunning as a board member of the well recognized Creative Coalition. As an active board member the ‘Lakeview Terrace’ star aids in raising awareness of first amendment rights and support of arts in education in addition to recognizing those who have made a difference including TLC’s Tionne ‘T-Boz’ Watkins. Washington recognized Watkins, who a spokesperson for the Sickle Cell Foundation. Also a member of the V-Counsel, Washington works amongst other advisors to end violence against women and girls.
Other entertainers including Jane Fonda, who co-starred with Kerry in the play ‘Necessary Target’ admire Washington’s drive to not just be a pretty face in Hollywood but to be active, productive and giving. “She has a life beyond her career that is fulfilling for her â her activism,” says Fonda.
