It was a full house Thursday evening (Jan 17.) for Rick Ross' up and coming artist, Donald "Rockie Fresh" Pullen's event at Sunshine Cinema. Fresh was promoting a listening party for his latest mixtape, "Electric Highway," but with a visual twist. Fresh's guests gathered around at the cinema with popcorn and Ciroc drinks and watched a 3D visual presentation of the mixtape. The 80's theme visual presentation consists of various video games graphics and lightening effects.
"It's more than just a mixtape, it's a listening experience. My label held me down on this mixtape, this is a good moment for me. I want to thank everybody for coming out to the listening party and my labelmates, Wale, Meek Mill, and Rick Ross," said Fresh. "I have to stay true to my musical roots. The mixtape was kinda like a futuristic situation."
The theme of the mixtape is Fresh expressing his views of what's yet to come in the industry, receiving credibility in the industry, "rollin' up," and remaining true to himself. The song, "Nobody" exemplifies Fresh's overall concept of the mixtape. He says on the song, "I'm wanted by many, pockets so plenty."
Some of the songs that Fresh played at the listening party were "The Lights," "Superman OG," "Life Long" featuring Rick Ross and Nipsey Hussle, "Show Me Sumthin'" featuring Sasha Go Hard, "Roll Up Right Now" featuring Curren$y "Nobody," and "I'm Ready." Fresh says he enjoyed working with Sasha Go Hard, another artist from Chicago and he's looking forward to working with her in the near future.
Fresh wants the mixtape to be a "soundtrack" for any other artists who want to achieve their goals in music. Since he signed to Maybach Music Group, he wants to play his part as an artist. Fresh compared his role as an artist to basketball because everyone has to play their position. And that's his main focus right now.
Fresh, a Chicago native, recorded his first mixtape, Rockie's Modern Life, at a recording studio in Chicago. Managers, Andrew Koenig and Andrew Gertler, recognized his artistic vision and rapping abilities and the mixtape was released in 2009. Fresh released another mixtape, The Otherside, in 2010. Since Rockie's Modern Life was successful, he collaborated with Rick Ross, Twista, Big Sean, Josh, Joel, and Benki Madden of Good Charlotte. Also, Fall Out Boy frontman and Fresh's major influences, Patrick Stump was impressed with him as well. Fresh is listed on the "25 Hotest Artists Under 25," according to Metromix. In 2012, Fresh released his mixtape, Driving 88 and was signed to Ross' record label, Maybach Music Group last July.
Fresh's mixtape, Electric Highway, will be available on January 21, 2013 at 3pm. Preview the project below.
