Rising pop artist, Sonny Mackenzi, is premiering the brand new video for her single, “Rewind,” exclusively today via Popstar! The video, which was directed by Derek Blanks (Nicki Minaj, Kelly Rowland), can be watched HERE. Co-written by Matt Bubel and Traci Hale, and produced by the legendary Craig King (Kanye West, Ludacris), “Rewind” serves as a follow-up to Sonny’s hit summer-love single, “New Crush”. “‘Rewind’ is really special to me, so I was pretty excited about creating the visual for it”, Mackenzi explains. “The storyline was inspired by my actual story of moving from Colorado to Atlanta, and leaving everything I knew behind to pursue music.” Fans can now purchase the single on iTunes or stream it on Spotify.
Combining the theatrical flair of Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, with the world-class pop diva appeal of Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato and delivering the vocal chops of a young Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston, Colorado-born Sonny Mackenzi has dreamed of singing, writing and performing from the age of three. She has already put in her requisite 10,000 hours, putting aside her successful career as a fashion model, while still a teenager, to head to Los Angeles, where she was discovered by veteran Warner Bros. Records A&R executive, Nick Haussling, who took her under his wing with plans to eventually sign her.
Over the past few months, Mackenzi has generated quite a buzz in the pop music world, with continuous spins on NBC’s The Today Show, and praise from TheTopTens.com, who placed her at #3 for Best New Female Pop Artist. On top of this, her debut single/video, “New Crush”, currently has over 30k views on YouTube and was picked up by notable pop publications including TWIST Magazine, Celeb Mix, Fangirlish, POParazzi and more!
“Rewind” is one of my favorite songs on the EP. I remember sitting down in the studio, it was early on in the writing and recording process, and we were working on something entirely different at the time, some love song or something. I remember the conversation turning into what my journey as an artist had been, and what the industry expected me to be verses what I wanted to be, and I was like “I can’t really do this love song today” and so, with the production talents of legendary Craig King and co-writers Matt Bubel and Traci Hale, we created “Rewind”. One of my favorite lines in the song is “I found it easier to be myself, rather than trying to be somebody else”. It took me a long time to come into myself and to be brave enough to stand up for what I wanted as an artist and as a young woman in general. There were a lot of people I trusted who were telling me that in order to be successful I had to do things I didn’t believe in and become something I wasn’t. I went against them even though it was scary, and I’m so proud of that today. The song”Rewind” just sums my story up. It’s a great, inspirational, powerful ode to self love and perseverance, and a reminder to always keep looking forward, no matter what. – Popstar
