After being in the girl groups Gyrl and Dame Four, and having her debut solo album, Split Personality, shelved in 2006, L.A. singer-dancer Mila J’s been fairly ghost, only appearing on the tape Battlefield America Soundtrack Vol.1 in 2012 while her little sis Jhene Aiko slowly ascended into the spotlight.
Now, in the midst of the buzz surrounding her new single “Smoke, Drink, Break Up,” from her upcoming second album, M.I.L.A (Made In Los Angeles), Mila drops a new mixtape of original material called Westside to push her sound further.
There’s some nice throwback sounds going on through the whole set — she drops some introduction bars on the first cut "Can You Hear It," channeling a Timbaland and Magoo record. She continues the throwback sass on laid-back cuts like “Split Personality” and “Hustled,” while “Make Believe” and “All Night” enforces a more contemporary sound. Satisfying harmonies are prevalent throughout as Mila sings about emotional, real relationship themes.
