R&B star and “Duets” mentor Robin Thicke began as a force in the background of many hits for other artists before venturing out with his own solo projects. Writing and producing for the likes of Christina Aguilera, Brandy, Mya, and Jordan Knight, Thicke discusses that his wife, actress Paula Patton and two-year-old-son Julian can both sing.
Little known fact: Patton, whose film credits include “Precious” and “Mission Impossible 3” sings a small part on Usher’s “Can U Handle It” from his Grammy Award winning album “Confessions.” The track was produced by Thicke, who explains to The Washington Post, “The song called for a female vocal, a very simple, more like a talk-whisper part and … I said, ‘Hey honey, you mind putting something down for me?'”
While we don’t know if Thicke plans on using his wife’s voice on any other projects, Thicke points out there are definitely no plans for a Paula Patton album. He says she would jokingly ask to be recorded and would object, saying, “No! We’re not starting that. We are not going to get into the ‘you recording an album.’ Go find another producer if you want to do that.”
Thicke and Patton have a son together, Julian Fuego Thicke, who Thicke says can carry a tune also. “He has incredible pitch,” Thicke said. “He wakes up every morning and before he even cries to be taken out of his crib, the first thing he does is sing. He just kind of lies there in his crib and sings songs for a little while.”
The singer-songwriter is currently on “Duets” as a mentor to aspiring singers. “Duets” airs on Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
