amy winehouse, Jean Paul Gaultier
Amy Winehouse’s legacy stretches beyond her musical accomplishments; her retro attire, beehive hair-do and thick eye-liner have left an imprint on the fashion industry. Jean Paul Gaultier pulled inspiration from the ‘Back To Black’ singer for his new spring /summer collection, which he recently revealed at Paris Fashion Week.
“Amy Winehouse was a true style icon. What she stands for above all, is uniqueness. Both in music and the way she dressed, she mixed a great many influences to create her style,” Gaultier told reporters.
Gaultier, the fashion designer behind Madonna’s cone bra bustier, new line featured 50s and 60s tailored curves.
In contrary to Gaultier’s praises for Winehouse, her father Mitch said the show was done in “bad taste” and that the fashion maven was capitalizing on his daughter’s death. Mitch said the family was devasted by pictures of catwalk models smoking amongst other things.
“We’re still grieving for her loss, and we’ve had a difficult week with the six-month anniversary of Amy’s death,” said Mitch. “To see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on.”
He adds: “We’re proud of her influence on fashion but find black veils on models, smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music in bad taste. It portrays a view of Amy when she was not at her best, and glamorises some of the more upsetting times in her life. That’s upsetting for her family.”
