Over the years I’ve noticed that R&B singers and songwriters are getting more in-your-face about how they like it in the bedroom. Back in the 60’s and 70’s music was all about love but now we are hearing more songs from artist detailing what they require in the bedroom. Not that the artist of the 60’s and 70’s were not referring to the acts of lovemaking, they just did it in a subtle way. I remember growing up listening to “Superfreak” by Rick James thinking that he was talking about something really X-Rated but the music that we are hearing today is nothing in comparison. The emergence of such artist like Prince and even R. Kelly has opened our minds up to receiving more graphic details of sexual encounters through song. Prince has to be one of my favorite artists and I must say that some of my favorite songs from Prince include “Scandalous“, “Insatiable” and “Darling Nikki“. Prince belts “Like a wildcat, Martha, in a celibate rage. I want U alone in my dirty little cage” on Insatiable. Now what woman wasn’t going crazy off of hearing that track!
When you think about songs for the bedroom the name R. Kelly always comes into mind. R. Kelly has been making “sex-y” hits since he started out with his group, the Public Announcement. From “Honey Love” to “Sex Me” to “Your Body’s Calling,” R. Kelly holds the title for making music to groove to in the bedroom. Taking over where Kelz left off is R&B coroner, Trey Songz. Trey Songz released a mixtape called “Anticipation,” that included hot and sexy hits like “Scratchin Me Up” and “Yo Side of The Bed.” On “Scratchin Me Up,” Trey says “Pose for the camera while it flash. Take pictures when we kiss. I grab yo a**. Nasty love. Passionate. Give it up. From beginning to the end the way we get it in.” Songs like these are sure to ignite the lover in anyone who listens.
While the men have dominated making the late night “sex-y” hits, we can’t give all the props to the male singers. When I think of one female that has brought sexiness to the sheets I think about Janet Jackson. While most women were singing about love and romance, Janet Jackson was putting out hits like “70’s Love Groove“, “Anytime, Anywhere” and “Moist.” Janet has never been afraid to let the men know that women are able to dominate in the bedroom just as they are. If you listen to the lyrics on “70’s Love Groove” you would know what I am talking about. Janet Jackson clearly states, “Anything, anything baby. I’ll take you places you’ve never been before.” This is definitely a song that will have your man purring at your feet.
With sexuality becoming more and more open on the radio and in movies and television, we are learning to embrace the new sound of love, which includes lovemaking. Leave it up to artists like Prince, R. Kelly and Janet Jackson as well as newbies Trey Songz and Pretty Ricky to keep bringing you the hottest songs for the sheets. Are you ready to get Down and Dirty?
