After what most would call a disastrous attempt of a biopic (Aaliyah: Princess of R&B) a few weeks ago, I must say, I’m kind of nervous to see what Lifetime has up their sleeves when it comes to their production of Whitney, a film about the tumultuous relationship between the late icon Whitney Houston and her then-husband Bobby Brown.
Set to premiere on January 17, 2015, the film stars model/actress YaYa DaCosta as the late vocal icon (Deborah Cox on vocals), and was directed by Angela Bassett in her inaugural debut as a director. Bassett has played many strong women (Tina Turner, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, Michael Jackson AND Biggie Smalls’ mothers, etc.), so she knows a thing or two about portraying inspiring women, but could her direction that save the film?
We first saw DaCosta on the third season of America’s Next Top Model and has since starred in minor roles in The Butler, as well as various other films and television shows. This could be a breakout role for her.
Only time will tell, but for now, be here’s a few flicks from the set. How does it look to you? Will you be watching?
