Solange Knowles may be Beyonce’s little sis, but she’s also an accomplished woman on her own. At only 27-years-old, Solange has experienced marriage, divorce, motherhood, and business triumphs as the creative director of Puma and label owner of Saint Heron Records. In the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar, she candidly explains how she feels much older than her score and seven years on the earth.
“Just going through a marriage and a divorce will give you an insane amount of perspective on life,” the mother of 9-year-old Daniel Jr. explains. Solange married her high school sweetheart at 17-years old, had her son, and divorced by the time she was 21. “Everyone talks about how, in your 30s, all of these growing pains transition into wisdom and you feel more self-assured and confident,” she explained, “but I think I had a bit of a jump-start on that at 27.”
In the six years since, Solange has co-parented along with developing her career as a DJ, label owner and creative director. About balancing motherhood as a co-parent and her career, the fashionista says, “I’m able to say, ‘I need to finish this album, can you step up and take care of the boy?’”
Having lived in Moscow, Idaho with her ex-husband while he attended college, Solange is no stranger to living where the wind takes her. A few years ago, she moved to Brooklyn, now she’s relocated to New Orleans. “I’ve thought about moving to New Orleans for years but just never had the courage to do it. Now my son is at that age where he’s really establishing friends and a community, so I feel like this is a good time to try it out,” she said explained about her choice to live in the Big Easy.
Solange has accomplished a lot in her young life, Her free-spirited, creative. entrepreneurial mindset serves as an inspiration for 20-something young women. “For the first time in my life, I’m basing every decision around the idea of whether I want to do it or if I think it will be inspiring,” she concluded. “And that’s paid off for me.”
