Could an R&B diva take over the X Factor when the second season premieres this Fall? Following Monday’s surprising firings of host Steve Jones and judges/mentors Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, sources say Simon Cowell is looking for a bigger star — likely a female recording artist.
For sometime now Simon Cowell has had his eye on legendary vocalist Mariah Carey, boasting at one point that he had booked her, in some capacity, for the first season of X Factor. While it did not happen, it seems likely she could be the big star he plans to bring in this fall.
According to Billboard, a source close to the show and Cowell’s ongoing meetings this week, he “has decided that the show needs a bigger celebrity on the panel.”
Ironically, Cowell said something similar to that when referring to “Motivation” singer Kelly Rowland last year.
“I think Kelly, maybe in poor ol’ Nicole’s position, would have been a better choice,” Cowell told E! referencing the rumor that Rowland would replace Scherzinger. “But you know what, they’re stuck to what they’re paid to do, but I’m just not very happy [with Nicole].”
It is no secret that Simon Cowell values a strong panel. Speaking with Singersroom last year, he expressed how vital the panel is to the entire process.
“We made it clear to everybody on the show, it’s not a popularity competition for us, we’ve got to be a good judging panel and you’ve got to help me find a star because we’ve got a lot invested in this show,” said Cowell.
At this point, LA Reid remains on the panel following his signing of X Factor finalists Chris Rene and Marcus Canty.
X Factor is expected to return in September.

The first season of the X Factor was a huge success around the world. With Simon Cowell at its helm, it became one of TV’s most talked-about shows. Now it looks like things will get even bigger for Season 2 – if reports are true that Mariah Carey and Kelly Rowland may be added to the lineup. It would certainly add some serious star power to an already impressive panel consisting of Demi Lovato, Paulina Rubio and Antonio “LA” Reid.
But just how likely is it that we’ll see Mariah or Kelly on our screens come next fall? Well, according to sources close to both singers nothing has been finalized yet but talks are ongoing between them and producers. So stay tuned: If everything goes well there could soon be two new faces judging your favorite contestants!
Potential Judges
The X Factor is shaking up its line-up for the second season, with Mariah Carey and Kelly Rowland both being considered as potential judges. The two singers have had successful careers in music, each achieving many awards and accolades throughout their time.
Mariah Carey has been one of the most successful female singers in history, selling more than 200 million records worldwide and having eighteen number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. She was also voted by Rolling Stone magazine as the “Songbird Supreme” due to her vocal range and power. Additionally, she earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019.
Kelly Rowland, who rose to fame as a member of Destiny’s Child alongside Beyonce Knowles, has also achieved great success since then. She released four solo albums that topped international charts, sold millions of copies around the world, and won multiple awards at different ceremonies such as Grammy Awards and World Music Awards. In addition to that, she became an internationally recognized judge when she joined The Voice Australia in 2018.
With such impressive resumes between them, it’s no surprise why producers are considering Mariah Carey and Kelly Rowland for X Factor’s second season judging panel.
Possibilities For The Upcoming Season
As the next season approaches, a lot of speculation is brewing as to who will be part of the judging panel. Mariah Carey and Kelly Rowland certainly seem to fit with what producers are looking for in terms of star power, but nothing has been confirmed yet. However, there’s no denying that having such two iconic singers on board would be quite an exciting development for X Factor fans.
If both superstars decide to join forces for Season 2, then it could make for some very interesting dynamics between them. After all, they have had their own individual successes throughout their careers which could bring forth different perspectives when critiquing contestants’ performances. On top of that, they also have diverse backgrounds and tastes in music which can help shape the show’s direction and influence viewers around the world.
It remains to be seen if this dream team comes true or not, but one thing is certain: whatever happens in X Factor’s second installment, it’s sure to be filled with intense competition and amazing talent from both judges and contestants alike.
Conclusion
With the return of X Factor for its second season, speculation is running high about who will be joining the panel of judges. Mariah Carey and Kelly Rowland have both been named as contenders, raising anticipation even further.
