The hosts of TV One talk show Sister Circle invited Singersroom to their on-set kitchen for an installment our “Soul Tasting” series that was in no shortage of hearty bites or laughs.
“Your show reminds me of a heaping helping of soul food,” SR correspondent Akeem Toure explained as we treated Rashan Ali, Syleena Johnson, Kiana Dancie, and Quad Webb-Lunceford to healthy meal-prep plates by Atlanta chef, Izzo Walker.
The ladies talk about adjusting to life as TV hosts, what music they have on repeat, and even dish out advice for rap star and mother-to-be, Cardi B – all while enjoying a Southern wine-braised, onion-ground chicken burger, served with sweet potato chips.
Regarding Atlanta and its influence on Sister Circle, Married to Medicine star Quad says, “This is the mecca for African-Americans… You have your shows on the west coast, your shows on the east coast, but there was nothing that was centered in the South. Why not have a talk show out of Atlanta?”
Catch the rest of the interview, as well as the answer to what new music artists Rashan Ali would tap to do a reboot of Outkast’s groundbreaking album “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik,” below.
For our true “Soul Tasters” out there, Chef Izzo’s recipe from this Soul Tasting can be found below. When you try out these meal prep delights, don’t forget to catch Sister Circle, which airs weekdays at 12/11c on TV One!
Chef’s recipe: Plum Wine Caramelized Onions and Mushroom Chicken Burger
BURGER:
1/2 lb Ground Chicken
1/2 lb Chicken Sausage
1 Tbsp fresh garlic, chopped
1 Tbsp fresh oregano, chopped
1 Tbsp shallots, chopped
1 tsp Thyme, chopped
1 tsp salt & pepper (to taste)
CARAMELIZED ONIONS & MUSHROOMS
1 ea purple onion, sliced
6 ea portabella mushrooms, quartered
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 c Japanese plum wine
3-5 sprigs of thyme
2 Tbsp of unsalted butter
kosher/sea salt & pepper (to taste)
Mix together all ingredients (Chicken Burger) and form burger patties. In a cast iron skillet, lightly oil skillet, cook burger until golden brown on medium-high heat(approx. 16-18 minutes), flip burger and remain cooking until burger’s internal temperature reaches 165F. Remove from skillet and let rest. DO NOT CLEAN SKILLET !!!!….IN THE SAME HOT SKILLET(medium heat) pour oil, onions, and mushroom until onions begin to soften, pour wine in and reduce sauce to about 3/4 and add thyme. Once reduced to half add butter, salt, and pepper and reduced to almost 10% and add to burger. You can add any FRESH condiments to compliment your sandwich, especially when you add a toasted brioche bun *finger licking good*
