Rising hitmaker Ayo Jay is riding high on top of his Fetty Wap-assisted single “Your Number,” and he may end up being the one who brings the Afrobeat sound to the mainstream market in the U.S.
Knowing about different markets may be Ayo’s forté: the artist has his B.S. in Economics, but it was his love of music and songwriting that led him to pursue a musical career. “Before I started making music full time, my parents were just about making sure I got my degree…As long as I got my degree, I could do whatever I wanted,” he explained.
Despite his upbringing in Nigeria, and his tropical-tinged sound, Ayo didn’t get into Afrobeats until fairly recently, and he’s passionate about spreading the sound to the four corners of the globe.
“When I moved to New York in 2007, that’s when I started getting into Afrobeats….it’s just the new generation African guys who are just trying to sell the music out to the world; we’re trying to take it to the next level,” he said.
And that seems to be what’s going to happen: according to the singer, he’s prepping a video for “Your Number” and other big features on his project.
“I did some stuff with Tyga, I did some stuff with Pitbull, I did stuff with Nico and Vinz..and there’s gonna be a twist with a big artist.”
