If you need more proof that a D'Angelo album is coming, here it is folks.
The soulful crooner issues the new single "Sugah Daddy" as a part of the Red Bull's 20Before15 series, and while there are some upgrades to his musicality, you still get the silky falsetto, and soulful delivery that have kept fans yearning 14 years for a follow-up to Voodoo.
"I respect [the term neo-soul] for what it is, but anytime you put a name on something, you just put it in a box," D'Angelo stated in May (2014). "You want to be in a position where you can grow as an artist. You never want to be told, 'Hey, well, you're a neo-soul artist.' Right now, I'm not. We're going someplace else."
As previously reported, D'Angelo will release his long-delayed follow-up, Black Messiah, featuring his band, The Vanguard, which includes bassist Pino Palladino, guitarists Jesse Johnson and Isaiah Sharkey, keyboardist Cleo “Pookie” Sample and drummer John Blackwell, this month.
