Danish electric-soul duo Quadron (Robin Hannibal and Coco O.) enlist Kendrick Lamar for the smooth groove “Better Off.” The two were formerly in a group called the Boom Clap Bachelors, who’s song “Tiden Flyver” Lamar sampled for “B*tch Don’t Kill My Vibe.”
About having Lamar on the collab, Hannibal said, “He invited us to collaborate on his own album, and we had such a great time working with him that we asked him if he wanted to be part of our project as well. We are so happy for all his success and we are very proud of this song. We wanted to have more of a fluid song that wasn't too over structured and had a bit of a bedroom/afterhours vibe to it.”
With a Marvin Gaye feel, Coco’s vocals glide oh so nicely on this one, Lamar’s verse is the cherry on top.

Background Information
Quadron is a Danish musical group composed of vocalist Coco O and producer Robin Hannibal. The duo has been making music together since 2005, when they first met in Copenhagen. Together, Quadron have released two studio albums: their debut self-titled album in 2011 and Avalanche in 2013. One of the most popular songs from the latter was “Better Off”, featuring American rapper Kendrick Lamar.
The song was produced by Hannibal and features an R&B beat with elements of soul and funk and lyrics about reflections on life choices made throughout adulthood. It starts off slow but gradually builds up to a more intense chorus that highlights both Lamar’s rap skills as well as Coco O’s smooth vocals. Aside from its catchy melody, “Better Off” stands out for its poignant message; it speaks to those who have experienced disappointment or regret at some point in life, offering words of comfort and encouragement to keep going despite any setbacks encountered along the way.
Lyrically speaking, “Better Off” resonates with listeners not only because of its relatable subject matter but also due to its clever wordplay. From lines like “I’m better off being alone” to “It ain’t easy livin’ low key,” each line carries a profound meaning that adds further depth to the track as a whole. With these thought-provoking rhymes coupled with melodic beats, it’s no wonder why this song continues to be so successful nearly seven years after its initial release.
Critical Analysis
Overall, “Better Off” is a powerful and emotionally-charged track that speaks to the universal struggles of life. Both Coco O and Kendrick Lamar deliver deep, meaningful lyrics with an intensity that captures the listener’s attention. The production from Hannibal is also excellent, as it creates a mellow but upbeat atmosphere that perfectly complements both artists’ performances. Additionally, its catchy hooks make it easy to remember while still conveying important messages about perseverance in difficult times.
The song has resonated with listeners since its release due to its relatable themes and thought-provoking lyrics. Its honest reflections on regret and disappointment are particularly impactful; by highlighting these sentiments in such a beautiful way, Quadron encourages us all to recognize our own inner strength even when faced with adversity. Moreover, this track serves as proof that music can be just as effective at comforting us during tough moments than any words of encouragement could ever be.
