Ms. Kelly Rowland is definitely talking a good game when it comes to information about her June 4 album, Talk A Good Game. The bombshell recently dropped some juicy details with Billboard about her upcoming forth studio album, which is amping up to be one of the most highly anticipated albums of the summer.
Rowland reveals she recorded around 70 songs, but had to narrow it down to 12, explaining that the process of doing so was difficult.“I kept going back and forth with my A&R and my manager, we’ve all been on this incredible journey together, and they’re just like ‘Save it for the next album!’ Because you just get so passionate and excited about these songs, you lived with them, you birthed them along with the producers. You become so attached.”
She’s also attached to this album because she made sure her R&B roots are present with the help of producers such as The-Dream, Boy Wonder, T-Minus, and Mike WILL Made It. The sound “feels like everything I wanted to make as far as music and R&B…They love R&B the way I do. It was so wonderful to be in the same creative space,” she dished.
Being a child of the 80s, Rowland says the album’s sound is inspired by that particular decade’s hit makers: New Edition, Pebbles and Babyface. She even collaborated with legend producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, but those sessions didn’t make the final cut.
Other features include Pharrell on the mic as a duet partner, Wiz Khalifa who’ll spit a verse or two, and Destiny’s Child members Beyonce and Michelle Williams. But don’t call it a Destiny’s Child song, “it’s me featuring Beyoncé and Michelle,” she clarified.
This will be the second time this year fans will hear the trio on a song, the first was “Nuclear,” a bonus track featured on the former group’s compilation album “Love Songs.” She describes the sound of the song will be “Soulllllll.”
As for the title, Talk A Good Game, her decision to name the opus that comes from people’s reactions to what she’s doing in her life at the moment, especially with the first single “Kisses Down Low.”
“There’s so much talking and people gonna be like ‘Is she really talking about this on the album?’ Even down to things on ‘Kisses Down Low.’ People are like, ‘you’re talking a good game right now.’ I thought it would be really cool to name the album after those reactions.”
