Sylvia Rhone continues to rack up the roster on her new boutique imprint, Vested in Culture. The latest signee to her label, which includes Sebastian Mikael and Harlem’s Deon Young, is new comer Kat Dahlia. The singer-songwriter, who can be described as a fusion of Nelly Furtado, Rihanna, Santigold and Gwen Stefani, is all about being herself and not conforming to anyone’s idea of what she should be.
“There’s no other way to stand out than just being yourself,” says Kat Dahlia, . “I write my own music. People say my voice is very unique and I do this rappy thing that’s kind of different, but if you really want to break it down, I’m just being myself.”
This “self” characterization is the driving force behind Kat’s debut single “Gangsta,” a true to life record about her struggles growing up.
“No, I ain’t stuntin’ like my daddy / He’s living with my grammy / Used to be a big baller / He’s surviving off of gambling / But I love him, he’s my daddy / Yeah, I love him, he’s my daddy / Put him in a big house before I ever see a Grammy,” issues the new comer on the track.
Kat is currently working on her debut project, which will dabble in various sounds including R&B, Latin, hip-hop and reggae.
