Singer Dwele gave a taste of what’s to come at a listening party in New York City on July 24th. Guests mingled and sipped champagne as music from his fifth album “Greater Than One” wafted through Jungle City Studios. “Greater Than One” stays true to the soul stylings of Dwele’s past projects and will satisfy those who have a sweet tooth for the “neo-soul” wave during the late 90s.
Dwele explained that the track “Going Leaving” is about a woman who unsuccessfully searches for love elsewhere after she first tried to form a relationship with him. The song features a guitar solo that brings an ’80s jazz groove-feel that Dwele said he wanted to convey with the tune.
Another track called “Takes Two 2 Tango” is about “dancing horizontally,” explains the singer. His falsetto floats over a low-key rhythmic bounce, no doubt symbolic of the act of which the subject matter speaks of.
“What You Gotta Do” features a guest spot from Raheem Devaughn, and has a baseline similar to the Stylistics’ hit “People Make the World Go Round.” The soul-duo school listeners on what one must do to keep a woman happy in a relationship. Lalah Hathaway also makes a guest appearance on the album.
Led by the first single “What Profit,” look out for “Greater Than One” on August 28th.
