Attorneys will give opening statements today in the William Balfour trial, the man accused of killing Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew in 2008.
Jennifer Hudson and her sister, Julia, are expected to appear in court today as Balfour faces three counts of first degree murder.
Prosecutors say Balfour went into a jealous rage when he saw balloons at the Hudson family home on Chicago’s south-side. He allegedly thought another man sent them to his estranged wife, at the time, Julia Hudson.
Judge Charles Burns completed jury selection last week, instructing jurors to render their verdict strictly on testimony not on the celebrity of Hudson.
The trial is expected to last a month with Jennifer and Julia Hudson possibly taking the stand to testify.
Balfour faces a mandatory life sentence.
