The MTV Music Awards was complete with stunning award recipients, quirky fashion, powerhouse performances, and a touching tribute for the late Amy Winehouse; the 2011 Video Music Awards had it all! Despite all MTV had to offer, the show was eclipsed by Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement.
Twitter, Facebook, the blogosphere, and every other media outlet were ablaze when the news broke. One of the most talked about moments of the night came after Beyonce’s ‘Love on Top’ performance when she dropped the microphone and began rubbing her baby bump in front of the packed auditorium. The camera immediately cut to a shot of the father-to-be who had the biggest smile on his face. The crowd went wild!
Beyonce’s moment helped set a new record for the most tweets per second, logging 8,868, according to Twitter. In addition to setting the Twitter record, Beyonce also helped MTV set several other network accomplishments. According to AdAge, the 2011 MTV VMAs drew a record 12.4 million total viewers. The network also saw record online viewership of the event, with 2.3 million video streams for the day. Also MTV.com and MTV Mobile gained huge lifts in viewership.
