The mid-1990âs was alive with chart topping, award winning all female groups. Amongst those were the hit R&B divas of Brownstone. Responsible for hits like âIf You Love Me,â these superstars were sure to be basking in the limelight for many years. However, the group has not experienced success like they had hoped and have been on hiatus for quite some time. One of the original members, Nicci Gilbert, has re-emerged though and she is ready to make her mark on the industry once more.
âBecause Iâve been gone for so long it makes it really difficult for people to buy into the Nicci Gilbert brand because nobodyâs really interested at this point, but Iâm working on become that enterprise,â Gilbert tells Eurweb. âIâm prepared to get down, roll up my sleeves and make it happen. Theyâll understand eventually.â
The artist expresses that her time out of the spotlight has been well spent. Besides getting married, Gilbert has been making large strides with famed playwright, Tyler Perry.
She says, “I was introduced to Tyler Perry and I was in the show âMeet the Brownsâ when it was just the original stage play.” Gilbert went on to say that after being a first-hand witness of Perry’s success she began to start writing as well.
Still a singer at heart, Gilbert says Brownstone was on tour last summer performing at the Soulfood Festival.
The songstress also gushes about the opportunity to work with R&B superstar Jazmine Sullivan in Brownstone’s upcoming record âWorldwide.â When asked how she felt about Sullivan’s recent announcement that she would be taking a break from music, she said she could see exactly where the singer was coming from.
âI understand 110 percent and I agree that she should do it,â says Gilbert. âI feel like anytime an artist feels they need to take some time off creatively they should do that and they will have so much more to offer when they come back. Iâve heard about it but I donât get too caught up in that stuff because I know that one time somebody says something and the next they change their mind.â
Gilbert switches gears to talk about the ‘Soul Kittens Cabaret’ DVD that hit stores yesterday. The DVD which features megastars Faith Evans and Fantasia, was written, produced, and directed by Gilbert.
She explains that the inspiration for ‘Soul Kittens Cabaret’ came from childhood experiences. “Iâve been around music my whole life and Iâve been around little clubs and little smoky spots my whole life. When I came up with idea I wanted to introduce these urban venues to these little spots where these people spend their whole lives.”
This singer, producer, actress, and writer is doing more than making a comeback, she is redefining herself and her career. Fans of Gilbert beware, she is back and ready to make up for lost time.
