While Gospel music and its image has evolved dramatically over the last ten to fifteen years, veteran recording artist Dorothy Norwood says some changes aren’t for the better. Speaking with Sun News recently, Norwood said “Gospel has really grown by leaps and bounds (but) I always tell people there are different strokes for different folks. I don’t have anything against contemporary gospel music, although I don’t sing it.” While Dorothy Norwood’s sentiment is shared by some, the veteran singer is quick to point out the fact that there is “some of it (music) that you have to stop listening and wonder if it’s really gospel music”. According to Norwood, there are also a number of record companies, who were not named in the story, that prefer their artists not use the name of God on songs. After singing songs like “Near The Cross” and “Mary Don’t You Weep” with The Caravans, Norwood says she for one, would not choose to be affiliated with any record label or entity that would prevent its artists from using the name of God in their music. In related news, Rev. Marvin Winans has signed on to appear in Tyler Perry’s “I Can Do Bad All By Myself” according to BlackVoices ! Winans joins an already stellar cast including Oscar nominated actress Taraji P. Henson, soulful singer Gladys Knight and Brian J. White (Stomp The Yard). Ton3x (Tonex) ‘Changed’ On “Unspoken” Album ? “Unspoken,” the highly anticipated album from ‘Gospop’ and Battery Records recording artist Ton3x is likely to surprise fans, critics and even those close to the singer. In a forthcoming exclusive with Singersroom’s Njai Joszor, Tonex says “Usually my albums are very autobiographical. Sometimes in my underground work it can be a little self indulgent and even cynical or cryptic to some because I tell the truth. I really do go to those dark places.” “This is an album where it’s really not about what I’ve gone through. It is more about relating. This is not a personal, personal album as far as the choices I made and that is new for me.” Stay clicked to Singersroom.com for Ton3x’s exclusive interview …. coming soon. As previously reported, Ton3x’s forthcoming effort and first major label album in five years, “Unspoken,” is slated for release Tuesday, March 17 via Battery Records.
