Not since R&B singer Faith Evans has there been another female artist on Bad Boy who could combine pop appeal with soul and top it off with actually being able to sing. Then there was Cheri. Cheri Dennis came unto the scene seemingly from no where. You may think she is being drowned out by the Beyonce’s and Rihanna’s but her girl next door demeanor combined with a natural talent and spunk is what’s going to make you remember her. Those who were digging her first single can still remember the hook. “I love you, I love you, hey- hey. So don’t break my heart.” Sounds like the theme for women all around America. What does Cheri Dennis have to say next?
Singersroom: Tell me about your new album.
Cheri Dennis: As far as the album, it’s called ‘And I Love.’ I don’t think we went into with the concept but after listening to the music it went with the overall theme. I think that most people have either been in love or out of love or transitioning into love. So, you know, that’s pretty much how it went.
Singersroom: The album is set to drop in February?
Cheri Dennis: The album will be in stores in February but we already released it on iTunes on November 13th. It’s a new thing that iTunes is doing. They haven’t really done it with a lot of artists so I’m a guinea pig of sorts but it definitely opens me up to another audience as far as world wide release. I think that’s great because I don’t think that I would have access to the audience that I would have access to so I think that’s great exposure for me.
Singersroom: I know that you are proud of the whole album but do you have any singles that you are really excited about?
Cheri Dennis: One single is “Ohh-Ohh,” another would be “Remind You.” Then there is one called “Pretend.” The last would be “Spaced Out.”
Singersroom: What is “Spaced Out” about?
Cheri Dennis: “Spaced Out” is paying homage to myself. I’m talking about myself and why I am the way I am.
Singersroom: I wanna take you back to when you got started. You were originally in a group called Spoiled. What happen with that?
Cheri Dennis: I was in that group from twelve to sixteen and it’s just really hard to keep groups together. Especially five girls who are going into puberty and the whole teenage thing. There was a clash of personalities. When we got older we started to have different interests. It was great because it taught me how to work with other people and prepared me for the industry.
Singersroom: How did you get hooked up with Bad Boy?
Cheri Dennis: I’m signed to a company called Cozy Music Entertainment. I freestyled at a party that they were having that Puffy and Kim were at and that’s how I got my start.
Singersroom: You were just that good that Puffy was like “I got to have you!”
Cheri Dennis: I meanâ¦You know when opportunity presents itself. I’m sure there are a lot of girls who sing way better than me and we might not ever know who they are. I think it’s just when opportunity is presented to you.
Singersroom: It is in rotation now. I want to change the subject and touch on something more personal. You were arrested a few months ago. Can you please tell us what happened?
Cheri Dennis: Oh you want to talk about me being arrested! It was nothing exciting. I was out with my family and my cousins got pulled over and they are young. I did not like how the police were treating them so I was defending him. Before I knew it I was being arrested. They were being too rough with him so I went and asked for badge numbers. I guess I annoyed them so they locked me up. It was nothing exciting. However, I do know that I’m not going back to jail. I’m not feeling the orange jump suit and bologna sandwiches.
