Butterfly Black, a dynamic new R&B duo consisting of GRAMMY award-winning bassist/producer Ben Williams and Broadway’s Nala Syndee Winters, has returned with “Lifetime,” a brand new single just in time for Valentine’s Day. Drawing inspiration from iconic male-female soul duos like Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Ike & Tina Turner, and Ashford & Simpson, “Lifetime” is a contemporary love anthem that speaks to the importance of love in all its forms. The song is meant to energize people in our post-pandemic times and reunite them through dance and love. The duo is committed to bringing back the style of true duo groups, with a fresh and modern twist.
The lyrics of “Lifetime” touch on love of others, self-love, and the importance of self-care through therapy. The song’s release is accompanied by a beautiful black-and-white music video directed by Lauren Desberg. The video perfectly captures the electric chemistry between Williams and Winters, which is evident both in the studio and on stage. The duo’s previous release, “I Just Want To Love You,” was a mid-tempo jam that reflected the influence of Leon Sylvers’ iconic production and songwriting work at SOLAR Records in the early-’80s.
Butterfly Black’s strength lies in the unique artistic backgrounds of Williams and Winters. Williams is an accomplished jazz musician who has won the 2009 Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition and performed with several legends in the industry. Meanwhile, Winters is a powerful Broadway performer who has acted, sung, and danced in several renowned productions, including Hamilton and The Lion King.
The duo is currently working on their debut 5-song EP, set to be released later this year. They are also preparing for a series of performances both as a duo and individually. Winters is set to perform solo at 54 Below in NYC on March 8th, and fans can keep up with Butterfly Black’s updates on their Instagram page.
