From sharing stages with Solange, Sampha, and Kelela, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Kelsey Lu delivers her newest single, “Shades of Blue.”
The piece comes right out of Kelsey’s experience with depression. “I wrote ‘Shades of Blue’ when I was squatting in a leather factory in Hoboken, New Jersey,” she explains. ” I was really depressed at the time, and my life had flip-flopped in many ways — musically, financially, romantically, and really, soulfully. Yet, I was writing a lot more than I had been and this song is a manifestation of that point in my life.”
“Shades of Blue” is the first release since Kelsey’s critically acclaimed debut EP Church was released in 2016.
“Happiness is a state of mind/And you almost stole mine,” she sings.
Written to give herself hope and now seeking to help someone else in their time of silence, Kelsey Lu leaves nothing but vulnerability and motivation on this track.
In other Kelsey Lu news — the singer has announced tour dates opening for King Krule. Kelsey is said to be performing with a full live band beginning next month with stops taking place in Los Angeles, Arcosanti, and Brooklyn.
