Ashanti is currently promoting her latest single ‘Say Less,’ but during a recent interview on SiriusXM’s “Conversations with Maria Menounos,” the R&B veteran was forthcoming about her personal #MeToo experience.
During the conversation, Ashanti opened up about a past experience where a producer wanted to hold her music hostage unless she performed some sort of sexual activity with him.
“I’ve come across a situation where there was a certain producer that, you know, he had his little crush or whatever, but it wasn’t anything like new, you know?” the 37-year old told Menounos. “Going into the session and recording, it was all good, and once I said ‘no,’ all of a sudden the track became $45K.”
She added, “It’s funny because he said something like, ‘Well just take a shower with me and let me do this.'”
Unlike many women who deal with similar situations (or worse), Ashanti had people in her corner to protect her against these mischievous behaviors.
“Luckily, I have a bunch of scary big brothers,” she admits about sending in the goons to shake things up (we can only imagine how that went down).
“The way that apology came in; I actually got three records for free!” she laughs, adding, “And I got two of them mixed and mastered for free also.”
Good for her as she adds, “I’m blessed because I have that.”
