You can always expect a dope duet from Ashanti and JaRule.
The long-time collaborators, who recently wrapped a sold-out co-headlining U.S. tour, teamed for the record “Helpless,” a song from the forthcoming project, ‘Hamilton: The Mixtape.’
On “Helpless,” Ashanti assumes the role of Elizabeth Hamilton (Eliza) while JaRule plays husband Alexander as they deliver their interpretation of the Broadway musical.
“Baby, I’m helpless,” sings Ashanti. “Look into your eyes, and the sky’s the limit / I’m helpless, baby, down for the count, and I’m drowning in ’em.”
“Helpless” by Ashanti and Ja Rule is a nostalgic yet fresh collaboration that brings together their signature blend of R&B and hip-hop, evoking the magic of their early 2000s hits. The track, which is featured on “The Hamilton Mixtape,” reimagines the original Broadway tune with a modern, urban twist. It opens with a smooth instrumental backdrop featuring soulful piano chords and a laid-back beat that sets a romantic and intimate tone.
Ashanti’s vocals are as captivating as ever, delivering the lyrics with a blend of vulnerability and passion that perfectly captures the song’s theme of love and longing. Her voice effortlessly glides over the melody, bringing warmth and emotion to the track. Ja Rule’s distinctive raspy flow adds a contrasting edge, infusing the song with his signature swagger and giving it a dynamic interplay between softness and grit.
Lyrically, “Helpless” tells a timeless story of falling head over heels in love, with Ashanti expressing the overwhelming feelings of being captivated by someone special. Ja Rule’s verses add depth to the narrative, portraying a lover who is equally enchanted and ready to take on the world for the one he adores.
Overall, “Helpless” is a beautifully crafted track that showcases the undeniable chemistry between Ashanti and Ja Rule. It’s a song that blends classic R&B vibes with contemporary elements, making it a standout piece that resonates with both longtime fans and new listeners alike.
Ashanti and Ja were destined for this collaboration. “When I was writing that song, I was picturing it as Ashanti and Ja Rule,” Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda told “Conan” earlier this year. “I was like, ‘Eliza’s Ashanti. Hamilton’s Ja Rule. Two verses, two choruses. A little Ja Rule. And then they’re married.'”
‘Hamilton: The Mixtape’ is slated to arrive on Dec. 2. The set also features appearances from Usher, Miguel, Alicia Keys, and many more.
