The soulful and sensual ‘Backseat’ is the lead single from Washington D.C. native and recent Dreamville/Interscope signee, Ari Lennox’s debut EP, PHO, released on October 21, 2016. On the song, featuring labelmate, Cozz, and produced mostly by DJ Grumble, Ari steps out of her safe zone for a tenderoni, intimate gem, all while maintaining her unique identity as a performer.
“Backseat” by Ari Lennox featuring Cozz is a standout track from Lennox’s 2019 album *Shea Butter Baby*. The song is a sultry, smooth blend of R&B and hip-hop, characterized by its mellow groove and laid-back production. Lennox’s soulful, velvety vocals take center stage, effortlessly delivering a performance that exudes confidence and allure.
The track’s production features a sophisticated mix of lush synths, steady drum patterns, and ambient textures, creating a relaxed, yet captivating backdrop for the song’s lyrical themes. Lennox and Cozz’s chemistry is evident as they navigate the song’s exploration of desire, intimacy, and self-assurance. Lennox’s verses express a sense of empowerment and control within a romantic encounter, while Cozz’s contribution adds a complementary edge with his smooth, rhythmic flow.
The chorus, with lines like “You can have it all, just come on, let’s get backseat,” highlights the song’s central theme of surrendering to the moment and embracing the freedom of passionate connection. “Backseat” stands out for its seamless fusion of R&B and hip-hop elements, showcasing both artists’ distinctive styles while delivering a compelling narrative of modern romance and confidence.
“While the music is soulful,” states Lennox, “I’m also talking about something suggestive and unusual for a female.”
“Sometimes women are put in this box where we’re only supposed to talk about certain things,” the 25-year-old singer-songwriter explains. “I want to be braver and riskier. I think people want to hear that kind of honesty and frankness.”
Regarding her new project, Ari says it sounds like, “Modern, relaxed, turned up soul… It’s just chill with trappy vibes reminiscent of the beautiful music from the ’70s.”
The opus also draws inspiration from some of the greatest female vocalists of all time: Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Minnie Riperton and Whitney Houston.
We’ve been supporting Ari for years, so it’s good to see her career rise.
