At first listen, singer-songwriter/producer Jason Stephens’ single “Brake Lights” ft. Brianna Stephens is an infectious jam rooted in the funky sound of the 80s, but if you listen to the lyrics, the song has a motivational message.
“I’m not defined by my circumstance / Walked right out of my situation feeling brand new,” he sings on the first verse.
“I wrote the song for my father while he was in ICU for over a month and a half in September of 2015,” Stephens explained in an email. “The song is encouraging people to leave the past in the past and focus on the future: better and brighter days.”
Stephens recently moved from Metro Atlanta to California to further his music career. “Brake Lights” is the lead single from his forthcoming album Decades.
