Michelle Williams Recalls Battle With Depression; Urges Others to Get Help

You never know what the next person is going through or dealing with. Take Destiny's Child member Michelle Williams for example, who have garnered success both as a group member and as a solo artist.

During a recent appearance on BET's "Lift Every Voice," the gospel star opened up about her long battle with depression. She also asserts that her latest album, Journey to Freedom, is a vessel to help others fight the mood disorder.

"A lot of us aren't living to our full God-given potential," Williams told host Fonzworth Bentley. "Let's get free from hurt that was probably done to you in the past."

Williams, 34, also delved into her personal struggles, which caused her to fall into depression — her symptoms dates back to when she was 15 years old.

"I thought it was growing pains. I thought 'oh I just like to be by myself,' but there were things going on around me, disappointments," Williams recalled on the show. "A lot of things that I saw with my eyes, a lot of things that I heard with my ears really hurt me. I carried that into my adulthood."

Williams advises others that are dealing with depression to pray as well as seek professional help.

"If the thoughts that enter your mind don't bring peace, happiness (or) joy, think on those things that are from above. If they're not (going) to take you above, that's not of God," Williams adds. "So you need to shake yourself and say 'boo … get out of your feelings, because it's you. That ain't God.'"
