Over the past decade, many R&B artists enjoyed short-lived industry relationships and/or marriages, and some of the breakups were messy and toxic.
Since there are many breakups in R&B, we’ve decided to list the Top 26 R&B breakups within the last ten years.

Bow Wow and Ciara
Bow Wow and Ciara dated for a year before calling it quits in April of 2006. During their time together, the two record the hit single, “Like You,” together.
Nas and Kelis
Many were shocked when Nas and Kelis announced their relationship, but as the world locked in, it seemed like they were two opposites that attracted like magnets. Nas even made an appearance in Kelis’ video for “Milkshake” in 2003. After two years of dating, Nas and Kelis wed in 2005. However, after five years of marriage, Kelis filed for divorce. Nas spoke about his separation from Kelis on the Vh1 documentary, Behind the Music, citing she took everything with her except her green wedding dress after he committed adultery. He also said he only knew about the birth of their son, Knight, from the celebrity gossip network, TMZ. This couple may never reconcile, but they have forgiven each other and remain amicable.
Tyrese and Norma Mitchell
Tyrese’s marriage to Norma Mitchell was short-lived; it only lasted ten months. The news was so surreal because most fans didn’t know he was married in the first place. Their divorce and current relationship have been tiresome, especially over the custody battle of their daughter. Recently, Norma broke her silence, claiming Tyrese was physically and emotionally abusive during the marriage. Whatever the case may be, we can just hope and pray Tyrese and Norma can come to an agreement and end their legal affairs civilly.
Q Mosley from Day 26 and Dawn Richard
Q and Dawn Richard were together six years before their relationship folded. Dawn mentioned in a Sister2Sister interview that she had to make the painful decision because she had to remind herself what she deserves and needs in a relationship. The two parted ways due to Q’s infidelity, and Dawn had zero tolerance for cheating, especially since Q cheated more than once. Even though Q and Dawn are no longer together, she says she will always love him, but it was time for her to move on with her life.
Janet Jackson and Jermaine Dupri
After seven years of dating, Jermaine Dupri and Janet Jackson went their separate ways in 2009. It was a cultural shock for everyone because many believed they were a good match even though he was six years her junior. It was just one of those relationships you thought would last forever since JD had a tattoo of Janet’s face on his ribcage. The cause of their breakup is unclear, but rumors about JD’s infidelity circulated to the press. Rumors claim Dupri cheated on Janet with a stripper in Atlanta and got her pregnant. Usher’s diamond selling album, Confessions, is to be about the breakup. Six years later, JD and Janet are still good friends and talk to each other occasionally. She said, “Jermaine is one of my best friends. I love him to death. We’re still connected. We’re still good friends. We still talk.”
Rihanna and Chris Brown
Back in the mid 2000’s, Rihanna and Chris Brown were friends, who eventually began a romantic relationship in 2008. The world was glued to every pin drop that involved the two until the infamous assault on Rihanna by Brown in February 2009. Following the incident, Brown lost all his endorsements, saw lower album sales, and had various run-ins with the law, which led to rehab, jail, and the loss of a lot of income. Rihanna, on the other hand, thrived! In January 2013, Chris and Rihanna decided to give their relationship another shot. Rihanna made it clear to any critics that she would walk away if he is physically abusive again. She said, “When you add up the pieces from the outside, it’s not the cutest puzzle in the world. You see us walking somewhere, driving somewhere, in the studio, in the club, and you think you know. But it’s different now. We don’t have those types of arguments anymore. We talk about shit. We value each other. We know exactly what we have now, and we don’t want to lose that.” However, the couple split up four months later.
Ray J and Teairra Marie
Singer/Actor Ray J ended his relationship with Teairra Marie after nine years and began dating Floyd Mayweather’s ex, Princess. He said his relationship with Teairra Mari was toxic and harmful, and he had to separate himself from her. However, Teairra explained her side of the story and said Ray cheated on her with Princess while they were together. The roller-coaster ride with Ray J and Teairra Marie is over for now, but many may still wonder if Ray and Teairra may get back together. Well, we will just have to stay tuned.
Monica and Rocko
Before Southern songbird Monica married basketball player Shannon Brown, she was married to Atlanta rapper, Rodney “Rocko” Hill. In many interviews, it seemed like Monica and Rocko tried to make their relationship work since they have two boys together. But, all good things must come to an end, especially if two people know it’s best to live their lives separately. Rodney said him and Monica had different outlooks on relationships but managed to stay friends, and he continue to manage his co-parenting duties with the R&B singer. As you can see, Monica is still standing!
Christina Milian and Nick Cannon / Andre Lyon / The-Dream
Christina Milian and Nick Cannon began dating in 2003 after shooting the movie, Love Don’t Cost a Thing. Three years later, Milian ended the relationship with Cannon due to infidelity. Cannon described his relationship with Milian as a “Christian romance,” and that wasn’t the relationship he had in mind. Years later, an older, wiser and mature Cannon apologized to Milian for his past transgressions.
Following Nick Cannon, Milian’s next serious relationship was with Andre Lyon of production duo Cool & Dre. The two met while Milian was working on her 2006 album, So Amazin, and quickly became an item. The split in December 2009, citing distance.
The-Dream and Christina Milian kept their relationship pretty private before wedding on September 4, 2009. On February 26, 2010, Milian gave birth to their daughter Violet Madison Nash. Pictures later emerged showing The Dream kissing his personal assistant, and it was announced that the couple had separated sometime in late 2009. Their divorce was finalized on October 23, 2011.
Usher and Tameka Raymond
R&B veteran Usher dated his former stylist, Tameka Raymond, in 2005. At the time, critics and fans didn’t approve his relationship with Raymond after dating TLC’s songstress Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas. Another person that was not pleased with Usher’s relationship with Raymond was Jonetta Patton, Usher’s mother. But, Usher proceeded with his relationship and married Tameka in 2007. Usher was a stepfather to Tameka’s three children from previous relationships. He also had two sons with Raymond, Usher “Cinco” Raymond V and Naviyd Ely Raymond. After two years of marriage, Usher filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, which also led him to write the autobiographical song, “Papers.” The divorce also led to a publicized custody battle for the next three years, and Usher eventually obtained primary custody of their two sons. Tameka also shared her painful divorce on Vh1’s reality shows, Atlanta Exes.
Ne-Yo and Monyetta Shaw
R&B superstar Ne-Yo was at the height of his career when he was looking for love. He had money, fame, and fortune, but his love life was bittersweet after ending his relationship with aspiring model Jessica White. That didn’t stop the hopeless romantic singer from falling in love once more with Monyetta Shaw in 2010. Shaw and Ne-Yo were together for five years and had two children together, Madilyn and Mason. Ne-Yo announced the breakup on Instagram, but Shaw said he ended their breakup on the phone. He explained to her that he wasn’t ready to settle down. It was a despondent moment for her, but Shaw appreciated Ne-Yo’s honesty. Shaw is moving on, and her main priority right now is the former couple’s two children.
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony
Latin songstress Jennifer Lopez married her third husband, singer Marc Anthony, in 2004. Her marriage to Anthony at the time was a major news feed because critics were obsessed with her personal life. Four years into her marriage (2008), she gave birth to twins, Emma and Max. But three years later (2011), the couple called it quits. Despite the fact that JLo was afraid to be alone, she admitted to everyone that her marriage wasn’t picture perfect.
Kenny Lattimore and Chante Moore
Love don’t live here anymore, and Chante won’t say she has a man anytime soon. Kenny Lattimore and Chante Moore ended their nine-year marriage in 2011. It was shocking for fans because they were inseparable. Lattimore and Moore also completed two albums together, “Things that Lovers Do” and “Uncovered/Covered.” The former couple didn’t fully mention their breakup publicly but said they will continue to be devoted parents to their son. However, Moore announced to everyone that they should purchase her album, Moore is More, to find out what really happened in their relationship.
Mashonda and Swizz Beatz
Before hip hop producer and rapper Swizz Beatz married Alicia Keys, he was married to singer Mashonda. Swizz cheated on Mashonda with Alicia while he was still married. Their relationship became one of hip-hop’s biggest love triangle. On many occasions, Mashonda called Keys a “home wrecker,” who destroyed her family.
Mashonda wrote to keys: “If you are reading this Alicia, let me start by saying, you know what you did. You know the role you played and you know how you contributed to the ending of my marriage. You know that I asked you to step back and let me handle my family issues. Issues that you helped to create… As a woman, I expected so much more from you. I never had intentions on reaching out to you this way but after reading your twits tonight, and the constant disregard, you left me no choice.”
Despite the end result, Swizz and Alicia Keys are now married and have two children together. It’s still an unfortunate situation, but they all seem like one happy family now.
R. Kelly and Andrea Kelly
The Pied Piper of R&B, R. Kelly, is one of the best-selling artists of all time. For many years, the industry did not know he was married to Andrea Kelly, his former backup dancer, and choreographer. He kept their marriage a secret so she can stay out of the spotlight. But after 13 years of marriage, Andrea and Kellz’s divorce was finalized. However, they are still amicable for their three children and Andrea says, “She will always love that man (Kellz).”
Faith Evans and Todd Russaw
The First Lady of Bad Boy, Faith Evans, was married for the second time to producer Todd Russaw. She met Russaw after separating from the late Christopher “Notorious BIG” Wallace. Evans and Russaw have two children together, Joshua and Ryder. But in 2011, the couple pulled the plug and decided to keep it quiet for their children. The two still supports each other’s professional endeavors.
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon
At first, many thought Mariah Carey’s marriage to Nick Cannon was a publicity stunt. This relationship was like putting apples and spinach together because it was unexpected. It was like why would Mariah even consider the comedian-actor? Even though their union was an eyebrow raiser for critics, Carey and Cannon still revealed their love to the world. Carey gave birth to twins on their third wedding anniversary and continued to perform her wifely duties, especially when Cannon was hospitalized for kidney failure. Cannon and Carey’s boom became a bust when Cannon filed for divorce in 2014 after six years of marriage. The couple separated, but Cannon says he will always love Mariah unconditionally.
Babyface and Tracey Edmonds
Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, a musical muse to many artists, married aspiring model Tracey Edmonds in 1992. Tracey and Babyface met when she was auditioning for his video “Whip Appeal.” The couple had two sons, Brandon and Dylan Michael and worked together on various musical projects. But after almost 15 years of marriage, they ended their relationship, citing irreconcilable differences. Babyface later on revealed that he was never in love with his ex, and they were holding to their relationship because of their “public image.”
Toni Braxton and Keri Lewis
R&B diva Toni Braxton reunited with old friend Keri Lewis when she was encountering a few woes in her professional and personal life. Back in the 90’s, Toni filed her first bankruptcy. It was Keri that encouraged her to push on and continue to fight during adversity. In her interview with Vh1, Braxton said, “Keri was my rock.” Their friendship flourished into a relationship, and Keri and Braxton married in 2001. They had two children, Denim and Diezel. At one point, Keri was Braxton’s manager and had more say in her career. But Braxton and Lewis went their separate ways and Braxton talked about her failed marriage on Vh1’s Behind the Music. “I had to figure out a plan for my life that had nothing to do with him,” she explained. “I was angry with everybody. I couldn’t believe this was happening to me. I felt that I was a person dealing with a lot of struggles and here comes another one.”
Brandy and Ryan Press
America’s sweetheart, Brandy, had her shares of troubles in the love department. She fabricated her marriage to producer Robert Smith because she felt ashamed around having her daughter S’yrai out of wedlock. The lie about being married jeopardized her career and affected her record sales for her fourth album, Afrodisac. But despite the drama, Brandy fell in love with music executive Ryan Press. Okay, maybe Brandy finally found love since she dedicated her single, “Wildest Dreams,” to Press while the couple was engaged. However, three years later, Brandy called off the engagement and some articles mentioned Brandy finding herself as the cause of the breakup.
Press and Brandy still communicate with each other, but will Brandy ever find love once and for all?
Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston
Bobby Brown and the late Whitney Houston were two peas in a pod. Brown and Houston were viewed as a “match from hell,” but for 15 years, the singers were able to keep it together. Brown, the bad boy of R&B, was viewed as a singer who corrupted Houston and influenced her to partake in drugs and behave irrationally. Drug abuse and infidelity affected their relationship a great deal, which ultimately led to their divorce in 2007. Fans were disappointed because behind the substance abuse, Whitney and Bobby really loved each other. Houston talked about her marriage to Brown on Oprah and said, “He was my drug.” For the next five years, Houston and Brown proceeded with their music careers. Unfortunately, Houston died in February 2012.
Jill Scott and Lil Jon Roberts
In 2009, Jill Scott ended her engagement with drummer Lil Jon Roberts. According to the rumor mill, Roberts left Scott for his ex-girlfriend within a few days after she had their son. If the rumors are true, that can be a sour taste in someone’s mouth, but hey, look on the bright side, Scott and Roberts are co-parenting and rebuilding their friendship.
Musiq Soulchild and Meelah from 702
It was sad to hear that the “Get it Together” vocalist and neo-soul singer, Musiq Soulchild, ended their love affair. Ironically, when Meelah was on R&B Divas, she explained why she and Musiq are living under the same roof even though they’re no longer together. The two are not romantically involved, but they still make music together and are raising a son with autism.
Future and Ciara
Ciara and Future was another relationship that crumbled in 2014. The “Goodies” singer ended her relationship with the “Move That Dope” rapper after he allegedly cheated on her. Future’s infidelity caused Ciara to end their engagement as well. It was disappointing because Ciara gave birth to their son, Future Jr. Now, Ciara is shifting gears as she gets ready to release her new album, Jackie, on May 4th. Her main focus is to be a great mom to her son and make a stellar comeback in music. But, looks like she found a new boo with Seatle Seahawks star quarterback Russell Wilson.
Nelly and Ashanti
R&B singer Ashanti and rapper Nelly dated for six years. The pair met at the MTV Video Music Awards and were inseparable. The powerhouse couple appeared in each other’s music videos and documentaries as well. Rumors spiraled about Nelly cheating on her, but neither Nelly or Ashanti fully explain their breakup publicly.
Big Sean and Ariana Grande
Rapper Big Sean and Ariana Grande ended their relationship after dating eight months, and we shouldn’t expect a reconciliation. The couple doesn’t look like they will remain friends since both since have been dropping negative reasons as to why they split. There are reports that Big Sean is furious at Ariana Grande because she didn’t fight for their relationship.
