For years, fans of late R&B singer Aaliyah Dana Haughton wondered whether or not a film would eventually be made about the beloved star. Well, for you eager folks, this dream is coming to fruition as the highly anticipated Lifetime Original Movie “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B,” will finally air on November 15 at 8/7c.
The Musical Angel was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 16, 1979, and was raised in Detroit, Michigan. She started her music journey early by appearing on Star Search at the age of ten. Two years later, Aaliyah signed her first record deal with Jive Records under her Uncle Barry Hankerson's tutelage via his Blackground Records. In 1994, “Baby Girl” released her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number — with musical support from R. Kelly, the set went on to sell over three million copies in the U.S.
During the next phase of her career, after she signed with Atlantic Records, she was introduced to Missy Elliot and Timbaland, who produced her multi-platinum selling sophomore album, One in a Million. The years following the release, Aaliyah also took up acting, appearing in the film Romeo Must Die.
On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and eight others were killed in a plane crash in The Bahamas. Following her untimely passing, a third album, Aaliyah, was released.
On November 15, fans will get to re-experience the life of this beautiful angel as her life story unfolds on screen. Judging from the trailer (below), the film will highlight her rise to stardom, her personal life, and the support from her family. The clip also highlights how the singer was poised to be a mega star.
