When we first saw Lion Babe (comprised of vocalist Jillian Hervey and producer Lucas Goodman), they released the uniquely, artistic visual for “Treat Me Like Fire.” Now they’ve return with “Jump Hi,” a bump that has us wanting to hear more from the duo.
With Erykah Badu-like vocals, Hervey soulfully wails over the funky track which samples Nina Simone's “Mr. Bojangles” and Childish Gamibino serves up some fly rhymes.
“Jump Hi” stems from their upcoming self-titled EP.
Lion Babe’s “Jump Hi” featuring Childish Gambino is an electrifying fusion of funk, soul, and hip-hop that radiates energy and confidence. The track, released in 2014, is a standout example of the duo’s ability to blend retro vibes with contemporary flair, creating a sound that feels both timeless and fresh.
Jillian Hervey’s powerful vocals are the centerpiece of the song, effortlessly gliding over a bouncy, bass-driven beat. Her voice is rich and dynamic, exuding a sense of freedom and empowerment as she sings about overcoming obstacles and reaching new heights. The lyrics are uplifting and motivational, with the repeated chorus, “Jump high, I’m feeling it,” serving as an anthem of self-empowerment and joy.
Childish Gambino’s verse adds a layer of smooth charisma to the track, his laid-back delivery contrasting perfectly with Hervey’s soaring vocals. His clever wordplay and confident flow blend seamlessly into the song’s vibrant energy, elevating the track further.
The production, characterized by its funky bassline, crisp drums, and vibrant horns, pays homage to classic funk and soul, while also incorporating modern elements that give it a fresh edge.
“Jump Hi” is a celebration of life, resilience, and the power of positive energy, making it an infectious and inspiring listen that encourages you to rise above and embrace your strength.
