No denying Michael, Janet, and the rest of the famed-singing Jackson family have talent, but each has admitted that the driving force behind their success is their controversial patriarch, Joseph Jackson. People have speculated whether it was strict parenting or abuse which propelled his children to stardom, and, admittedly Joe has called himself a harsh disciplinarian. But all in all, he loves his adult children and estranged wife Katherine, and it’s evident in recent blog posts posted to his website.
Papa Joe celebrated his 86th birthday on July 26 in Spain, and during the ten days prior, he reflected on each of his family members (one each day, in order of birth), sharing memories and fun moments about each member. Beginning with Katherine, he writes, “What I can say about Katherine, is she has the most gentle soul of any one I have ever met. And she loved her children. Many don’t know this but she helped me a lot rehearsing the kids. Although she does not celebrate birthdays she knows all their birthday’s by heart….There is so much of Michael in her.”
And when it comes to his kids, he has nothing but good things to say. About Jermaine, he says he sings ballads better than anyone he knows. “I have always felt that no one can sing a ballad song better than Jermaine. He has a God given talent to sing ballads better than anyone in this world. I am not saying this simply because he is my son. I have been around the block and know quality when I hear it. I only wish he sang them more often than he does,” he writes. About LaToya, “She has invited me on her show multiple times and makes certain to attend any of my events. I have grown very close to her over the years. She has surprised me in a very positive way. Never in my dreams did I imagine her showing me this much appreciation and love.”
He leaves his biggest comments to the two most famous Jackson kids, Michael and Janet. He calls Janet “very very smart” and a devoted daughter: he recalled her being by his side when he suffered 4 strokes last year. “She sat right next to me as I lay in bed, spent time with me, talking about a lot together. It meant a lot to me. I lay there listening to her as she talked about how she was going to get married. I am happy for her and wish her nothing but the best! I never tell you this, but I am proud of you Janet.” And finally, Joe revealed stories about Michael, one about how he loved kids, even as a child. “I remember, a long time ago, when I used to give him his allowance after the shows. He would use it all up to buy a lot of candy,” he explained. “He would get the children in the neighborhood to sit down with him in a circle, and he would keep feeding them candy, laughing and having the time of his life. I would look at him and it was beyond me, how in the world he got the most pleasure watching other kids eat candy.” He also goes into detail about a story about Michael’s heroism which saved Joe from harm and also solidified his “show must go on” work ethic.
