Soul and Gospel music veteran Merry Clayton has been hospitalized after an auto accident in Los Angeles.
Clayton, a famed backup singer, who has worked with icons like Ray Charles, Carole King and the Rolling Stones, suffered severe injuries to her lower body in a June 16 accident, according to the statement.
The news was announced in a post on her official website, which reads, "Merry was involved in a major automobile accident. Merry sustained severe injuries to her lower body, including major trauma to her lower extremities. We are truly grateful that our dear Merry is still with us."
The statement continued: "For all that know her personally, and those that have been blessed by her God-given talents, please know that her spirit is very strong and her faith unwavering. Her voice is not silenced and His praises continue to be on her lips."
Clayton began her career in the 60s — her story was featured in the documentary film 20 Feet From Stardom.
