Janelle Monae brought a bit of Brazil to the American Idol stage last night (March 27) with a fun performance of her new single "What Is Love," a contribution to the Rio 2 soundtrack (out now).
The stage was lit up like the Brazilian Carnival festival, a barrage of dancers, elaborate costumes, with live music and percussion. Monae’s talent was apparent as she sounded just like the recording, all while dancing!
"Wow. we just performed @americanidol. Thank you to #rio & #brazil for being an inspiration for my song for #rio2!!” she tweeted. About the dancing in the performance (helmed by famed choreographer Fatima Robinson ), Monae added “And yes we did bust the #naenae on #Idol. The Monáe náe that is. #rio2.” (check it @ the 1:19 mark).
